Interview with Olivia Borri at Sunday 28th of February 2016 FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer? OB: I have alway been creative, but until I had almost finished high school I wanted to either be a veterinarian or dog trainer. In years 9 and 10, I took design and technology classes at school which I loved, however, I was not thinking of doing anything like that as a career. It wasn't until I attended a career fair that a creative course sounds more like something I wanted to do. I was trying to decide between interior and industrial design but ultimately chose industrial design because I prefer to design objects rather than spaces. FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most? OB: I like to design things that look beautiful and give a sense of calm to a person looking at it. FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology? OB: My favourite material is wood. FS: When do you feel the most creative? OB: I feel the most creative just before falling asleep and in the shower. FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing? OB: I usually focus more on how the design will look and then figure out how it will work later. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized? OB: I feel happiness and pride. FS: What makes a design successful? OB: A design is successful if the designer is completely happy and the design makes other people happy. FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment? OB: A designer has the responsibility to not contribute any more to the problems with society and the environment. This means using materials that can be recycled and ensuring the conditions of factories where the object is produced has good conditions and treats its workers with respect. FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations? OB: Most of my design inspiration comes from outdoors in nature, such as trees and leaves. FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design? OB: My design style is simple and elegant with a pinch of whimsy. FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country? OB: I live in Sydney, Australia. I don't feel the cultural heritage really affects my design, other than the fact that I usually draw inspiration from nature. A pro of designing in my country is that my designs are only limited by my imagination. There are really no cons. FS: Can you talk a little about your design process? OB: If there is a design brief, I begin to research items similar and put together a mood board of the feel I'd like my product to evoke. I will then do a few sketches with ideas that pop into my head during research. I will then choose a few favourites and begin to do more technical research (e.g. how something will work, fit together, material choices, size). Once this is done, I will begin to do some quick sketches in SolidWorks. Whiles doing this, I usually encounter other problems that may need to be solved and work to resolve these. Once these are resolved, I go back to SolidWorks and finish the design. FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer? OB: Some positives are that you are able to make items that people want and need (e.g. when people say "I wish...existed so I could do..."). Some negatives are that sometimes you get a creative blockage and you can't think of many ideas, also sometimes you are unsure if one of your designs are actually good. FS: What skills are most important for a designer? OB: Creativity, imagination, perserverence, determination. FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.? OB: I usually use Photoshop to make my mood boards and to render my drawings, SolidWorks to 3D model my designs, Illustrator if the design needs to be laser cut, and Keyshot to render my 3D models. FS: How can people contact you? OB: People can either email me at: olivia.borri@hotmail.com or Phone me on: +61 449 672 215 or +61 2 9888 6851.
