Interview with Walmir Luz at Thursday 21st of February 2019 FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer? WL: Throughout my life I have lived in many cities so I have always been intrigued by design. Because of this constant change in location and exposure to new urban spaces I was able to realize how important architecture and design truly are since my childhood. So when the time came, it was an easy decision to choose a career path. FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio? WL: All Mies is a startup based in Los Angeles changing the status quo of the retail industry by creating timepieces with high end design and quality materials without premium price tags. FS: What is "design" for you? WL: Design is the ability to enhance an experience throughout a thoughtful and well planned creation. FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most? WL: I have always loved to create minimalist designs, products and architecture. FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it? WL: It is really hard to choose a single design with so many great creations being done every day but I love minimalist, clean and simple concepts. I really like the designs from SANAA, Apple and Dyson. FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company? WL: My first design was a website for a interior design firm. FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology? WL: There is nothing like working with a real model and ‘building’ your creation with your hands. FS: When do you feel the most creative? WL: Right after a trip to a new place. Travels are an important tool to gather new perspectives and inspiration. FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing? WL: The creation of a unique experience that can be used as the driver to the overall design and form. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design? WL: Joy and excitement! There is nothing like starting something from scratch and seeing it coming to life. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized? WL: Proud and accomplishment. When a design is finally done, you know it is a good one if you are proud of it! FS: What makes a design successful? WL: The perfect combination of design form and experience. Nothing can be either plain beautiful or plain functional, it has to be the merge of both. FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first? WL: Attention to details. It is in tiny little details that we truly know if something was well planned or just rushed. FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment? WL: Designers have the responsibility of being story tellers and creating the path for an experience, thus, shaping our society’s history and well-being. FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design? WL: Design used to be something really exclusive. Only a very selected individuals were able to access truly well designed products and projects. However, our society is becoming more and more design oriented. Design has become accessible to the masses and therefore we need to be critical about it. We have to continue to be great to the masses as we were to few people in the past. FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations? WL: I tend to look for a problem to begin with and then searching for an out of the box solution is what drives my design process. Travelling and keeping me informed about what is happening around the world is a great source for inspirations. FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design? WL: Typically I tend to like minimalist designs which was highly influenced by my 2 years of architecture in Chicago following Miesian principles. FS: What skills are most important for a designer? WL: Open-mind, courage and curiosity. FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.? WL: I tend to start any design by simply having some fun with paper and foam boards. I like to start with sketch models before diving into any digital design or more complex technology. FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time? WL: Well, this is a tricky question to be honest because it all depends on deadlines and clients. You need to balance goals and expectations with the deadline given. If there is no constraint of time, the creative process can be extended a little bit more. FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself? WL: I have a balance between individual and team work. Designs created by teams tend to be much more successful and richer in concept since you have many more people thinking in different ways towards a single goal. FS: How can people contact you?
