Interview with Kao Chu Yi at Monday 4th of April 2016 FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer? KCY: Chen-Yuan Kao received the B.S. degree from the Ling Tung University, Taichung, Taiwan, R.O.C., in 2004, and the Master degree from Kun Shan University, Tainan, Taiwan, in 2006. He is now a Ph.D. Graduate Student, Dept of Industrial Design with the National Cheng Kung University, Tainan, Taiwan. His current research activities include human-computer interface, augmented reality, industrial design. FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio? KCY: De Guang Degital Design Co. Ltd. was founded in Taiwan in 2011. Nowadays we’re devoted to product service and Research & Development. FS: What is "design" for you? KCY: Design is thinking made visual. FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company? KCY: Observation. FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology? KCY: 3D Rapid Prototyping, RP/Augmented Reality FS: What makes a design successful? KCY: "Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try Again. Fail again. Fail better." FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment? KCY: About the subject of contribution of literacy, it has been seen as the way of recovery to the society. It means that our (designers) ability (artwork/products) contributes to the society (social responsibility). After the revolution of industry, the design has been going to specialization and training the designers by education. It also let community realize the design and accept it, and change the life style further. That’s the idea from the time of Bauhaus. FS: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer? KCY: Get the right people doing the right things. FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers? KCY: Attitude is everything. FS: What skills are most important for a designer? KCY: Visual Communication. FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.? KCY: Good to Great. Jim Collins. Book Summary. FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
