Interview with Zhang Yahan at Friday 22nd of April 2016 FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer? ZY: It's one of my school work about Public facilities. Because I love art and design when I was young. Yes,I always want to be a designer. FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio? ZY: We are the Design Team from Industrial Design Academy of Luxun Academy of Fine Arts, made up with experienced professors and apprentices with innovation and vitality, combine the design and practice, and concentrate to the innovated design and research of public facilities product,with the purpose for meeting the requirement of people’s normal life in public places and easier behavior , to improve the quality of normal life and work efficiency, even to guarantee people’s security. FS: What is "design" for you? ZY: Design is my life FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most? ZY: I like product class works FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it? ZY: I like Japanese design. It's minimalist and graceful. FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company? ZY: Glue gun FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology? ZY: Solar power FS: When do you feel the most creative? ZY: At night FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing? ZY: Design’s fuction FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design? ZY: Pleasure FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized? ZY: I feel so happy and satisfied FS: What makes a design successful? ZY: A mighty heart and agile observation FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first? ZY: Product’s fuction FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment? ZY: Make the world better FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design? ZY: Design field is getting better. The future of design is more convenient and more graceful FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition? ZY: At LAFA gallery . It's in the works FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations? ZY: I get design inspiration from my daily life. I browsed through the library. From my daily life. FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design? ZY: My design style is international style. My life made me explore more this style. My design is always focus on the functional. I draw many sketch for my new design. FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country? ZY: I live in China. Yes, I do. I have much to be proud of. FS: How do you work with companies? ZY: We discuss our ideas. FS: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer? ZY: Companies should tell their ideas to the designers clearly, and respect their design ideas. Companies can know designer‘s ability from their art work. FS: Can you talk a little about your design process? ZY: One day I has a great idea about traffic cone. I considered it could be more convenient and more multifunctional. So I draw many sketch. Then I told my thought to the teachers. Teachers think it has so many difference from the traditional type. Finally we found many data about it and make the virtual model. FS: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home? ZY: lamp,chair,clock,bed,table FS: Can you describe a day in your life? ZY: I design every day. FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers? ZY: Don't lose every inspiration. So I write my thought and inspiration on the sketch book. FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer? ZY: Because design is for people,sometimes we should suppress personal feelings.It's meaningful for people. So it let me feel something encouraging. FS: What is your "golden rule" in design? ZY: The design which be able to solve the problem of function design is good one FS: What skills are most important for a designer? ZY: Inspiration FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.? ZY: Paper and pencil. Rhino,Key-shot,photoshop FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time? ZY: Do some schedule FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end? ZY: More than 3 month FS: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer? ZY: where is your inspiration comes from? FS: What was your most important job experience? ZY: Every design practice FS: Who are some of your clients? ZY: Someone who need help. FS: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why? ZY: Product design work.Because it's for people's life. FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you? ZY: Be a designer forever. Maybe something about safe. FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself? ZY: I work as a team.
