Interview with Charles Randall at Thursday 21st of April 2016 FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer? CR: I have always wanted to go into engineering and design, but I am still undecided in what field. The Air Deck was based of of the strong light weight design of a spider web. The structure properly supports the rider without large gaps. FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio? CR: I am an individual designer who is completely unattached. My friend Parker Krueger and I worked on this project together. FS: What is "design" for you? CR: Design is creating something new and interesting from what you know and see around you, or from your own imagination. FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most? CR: I have not designed many works. FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it? CR: This design. It is by far my best design so far, and it is one of my only designs which comes from outside of school. FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company? CR: I have never designed for a company. FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology? CR: I have not worked with many materials. FS: When do you feel the most creative? CR: I feel the most creative in the morning, but I have the most interesting and entertaining ideas at about 2:00 AM. FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing? CR: I like to focus on the concept of functionality, then aesthetics. After that I adjust it to try and keep the soul of the design and make it possible and effective to produce. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design? CR: I feel inspired or frustrated, it depends on the problems I am facing. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized? CR: I feel proud of what I have accomplished. FS: What makes a design successful? CR: If a design changes any aspect of something to improve it in some way it is successful. The real question is how much improvement can you make in how many ways. FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first? CR: I always try and be open minded and think of all the possible pros and cons of the design. I try to take emotion out of the decision and use only logic. FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment? CR: A designer should find ways to make things better. That can be more efficient, safer, cleaner, or many more things. FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design? CR: It is shifting more towards concepts almost, and also towards electrical technology. I just hope that some old school features stick around. FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition? CR: I have never had an exhibition. FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations? CR: It comes from interests and moods at that particular moment in time. FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design? CR: I have not designed enough to have a clearly defined style, but I do like natural flowing lines as opposed to sharp geometry. FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country? CR: I live in West Lafayette Indiana. A very diverse college town with a large focus on engineering. It has very good educational programs, but also a lot of distractions. FS: How do you work with companies? CR: I have never worked with a company. FS: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer? CR: I do not really know, but I feel that using emotion in a logical manner can really bring designs to life. FS: Can you talk a little about your design process? CR: I found something that could be better, I thought of how it could be improved. I tried to find solutions to small problems, and I combined those solutions into one design. FS: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home? CR: A pencil, pen, notebook, laptop, and a good chair. FS: Can you describe a day in your life? CR: Wake up, go to high school, train for whichever sport is in season, do homework, relax and maybe if I am inspired sketch a little. FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers? CR: I am a very young designer so I want to say, anything is possible. All you need is hard work and a brain in your head. FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer? CR: Positives are you get to create things that could change the world. However, it is a lot of work. FS: What is your "golden rule" in design? CR: The best ideas come from the least expected places. FS: What skills are most important for a designer? CR: Creativity and passion are most important in my opinion. FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.? CR: I have a very small toolbox currently. I use pencil, paper, and Autodesk Inventor. FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time? CR: Right now designing is taking a back seat to my studies. This was my first project. FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end? CR: That depends on what it is and how much time you want to spend designing it. FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you? CR: I will be attending college at Purdue University and majoring in mechanical engineering. FS: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about? CR: Not at the moment. FS: How can people contact you? CR: People can email me at Charles17randall@gmail.com.
