Interview with Lovekar Design Associates at Monday 18th of April 2016 FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer? LDA: I come from a family of architects and architecture and design was a natural choice for me as a profession. The whole experience of creating something that betters people's lives was an interesting thought. FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio? LDA: Lovekar Design Associates is a boutique Architecture and Interior design studio based in Pune, India. We were a highly detail and design oriented organization that has won numerous awards at the national level. FS: What is "design" for you? LDA: Design for me is the power to be able to change someone's life for good by your creation. FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most? LDA: We like to design residences, corporate offices and educational institutes. FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it? LDA: The Rai House is our favorite design. FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company? LDA: We designed an office for a Construction company. FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology? LDA: Our favorite materials are wood and stone FS: When do you feel the most creative? LDA: While working on the details of a project. FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing? LDA: We focus on the detailing FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design? LDA: It's an exhilarating experience. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized? LDA: Most satisfying . FS: What makes a design successful? LDA: Adherence to the location , the climate and to pure thinking is imperative to a successful design. FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first? LDA: Whether it fulfills what it is designed for and it achieves it. FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment? LDA: A designer is the society's tool to a better environment and to a better lifestyle. Hence his responsibilities are serious and actions of high moral consequence. FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design? LDA: The future of design is phenomenal, with the world opening up to enormous possibilities. FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations? LDA: My source of inspiration is nature and the place i have grown up in , INDIA. FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design? LDA: MY design style is Contemporary, minimalistic , modern and suitable and pertaining to the modern Indian user. FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country? LDA: I am an Indian and i stay in INDIA, which has a fantastic culture of the arts and architecture. I feel that though we may look unto to world leaders in architectural practice and design, your own roots and culture plays the most important part in your role as an architect. FS: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer? LDA: Companies should select designers based on purity of thought and integrity to the design FS: Can you talk a little about your design process? LDA: Our design process is simple… we design taking into consideration the demographic location of the project, hence the climate we are going to subject our project to and the requirements given by the client. The design then is an easy outcome if you design with a pure mind. FS: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home? LDA: My favorite design items are clocks by Muji and Ikea, ethnic Indian sarees ( which have great design value) worn by my wife and handcrafted items collected from over the world FS: Can you describe a day in your life? LDA: A typical day is spent designing in office , with a couple of meetings with contractors or clients thrown in and a site visit if necessary. Evenings are spent in contemplation with Indian classical music playing in the background FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers? LDA: Young designers, especially in the developing countries, need to be focussed of the design developments back home rather than just copying work being done in the developed countries… Integrity to location, climate, local materials is of utmost importance while designing. FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer? LDA: I think there are only positives at this stage…. to be able to design and change the way people live or work is a strong tool that i am very happy to have. FS: What is your "golden rule" in design? LDA: The golden rule is purity of thought. FS: What skills are most important for a designer? LDA: Analytical and sketching skills are important. FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.? LDA: Sketchbook and a 4B pencil FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time? LDA: By doing it all the time…. the thought process is eternal FS: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer? LDA: How do you select colors and the design concept? FS: What was your most important job experience? LDA: Designing a campus for a KG school FS: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why? LDA: I enjoy detailing part of design FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you? LDA: More work…. till i retire FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
