Interview with Cristian Sporzon at Wednesday 17th of April 2019

FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
CS: Basically I am an Architect, some years ago I discovered design. It was an occasion, a friend of mine persuaded me to attend on a contest, I tried..

FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
CS: I am a freelance working on my own and collaborate with an engineering company

FS: What is "design" for you?
CS: Design for me is an opportunity, design maybe could be faster than architecture, you can reach your goal more quickly.

FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
CS: I tried to design a very different kind of products, furniture or tableware, but also lamps. Ther is not a product that I like design in particular.

FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
CS: My favourite design is the design that live forever as an icon, my favourite piece is the Barcelona armchair, anytime I think about this great piece of design I thought that it is immortal.

FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
CS: I designed Arco, and it was for a contest (not win)

FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
CS: Wood is one of my favourite material.

FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
CS: When designing I focus on the sensations that the piece I design reminds me.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
CS: Everytime is a new sensation, I'm happy when I find the right way to design something that gives me an emotion.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
CS: It's a big emotion, everytime, but suddenly I think that there is another piece that is waiting for me

FS: What makes a design successful?
CS: A successful design must have something that transform it in an eternal piece.

FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
CS: Future design have to look to environment.

FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
CS: My last exibition was at Fuori Salone 2014 I exposed my Arco bed. I don't know what will be my next one.

FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
CS: I live in Italy near Milan, I don't think that my country have affects my design deeply, but for sure we have a particular awareness about design.

FS: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
CS: Barcelona armchair, Arco lamp, Parentesi lamp

FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
CS: Being a designer is beautiful because you have the capacity to build your ideas, but you have also the responsability of what you create.

FS: What skills are most important for a designer?
CS: Creativity and imagination, but if you want to become a designar you must have curiosity and you have to know materials.

FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
CS: Starting from the idea to the realization it takes some weeks, but also some months, it depends on various aspects

FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
CS: I develop my design on my own, asking to some artisan in order to create the prototypes

FS: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
CS: Not yet
