FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
EJ: I was 6 years old when I started musical school "Ąžuoliukas" in Vilnius. So from the early ages of my life I was surrounded by art and music, it became a part of me. And that I think was one of the main reasons I decided to study graphic design. I like the idea of having an opportunity to be part of things that shape our life and influense how we feel and act.
FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
EJ: Currently I work alone.
FS: What is "design" for you?
EJ: It's what makes everything work, no matter what it is: just a table, packaging of product we consume or house we live in.
FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
EJ: Packaging, web design, editorial.
FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
EJ: There are thousands of designs that are beautiful in every way.
FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
EJ: It was a web design for my school. Yet my first real project was 20 years anniversary editorial for Vilniaus Private School.
FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
EJ: My favourite programs are the ones that don't crash during work...
FS: When do you feel the most creative?
EJ: Night is the most creative moment for me. It's so quiet and peacefull then: the city sleeps, no one texts you. A wonderful time to do something amazing!
FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
EJ: My main focus is to do a functionally beautiful design, the one that fulfills it's purpose.
FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
EJ: Responsibility is one of the main things that keep coming to my mind when I design something. Will my client like it? Will it help boost sales? Will it be successful?
FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
EJ: Proud. If everyting is how me and my client imagined, then it's really joyful to see your design in work.
FS: What makes a design successful?
EJ: I think that designs success depends on result it produces.
FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
EJ: Doest it work? Does it solve the clients problem? How it looks?
FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
EJ: I think that designers have even bigger responsibility for environment than everyone else, because designers are the ones who decide what and how materials will be used, how design will change our actions.
FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
EJ: Design was always going in the right direction. New materials, printing possibilities and even scientific discoveries do huge impact to how designers think. Ant that is a good thing. Only by collaboration between different fields of art, science and culture we can make bigger innovations and change our world to the better :)
FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
EJ: My last exhibition was in Vilnius Book Store, year 2013.
FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
EJ: Actually I don't know. Maybe it's that Spirit of Creativity which keeps on sending ideas to my head?
FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
EJ: I think my personal design style is still in it's development stage. But I like the idea of Scandinavian minimalism.
FS: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
EJ: Main advice to a company would be to formulate a very distinct problem and expected results. That way designer can get work done much easier and faster.
FS: Can you talk a little about your design process?
EJ: Problem - research - sketching - result.
FS: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
EJ: My pencil, some design books and internet.
FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
EJ: Don't say that your designs are uninteresting, don't stop talking about your works.
FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
EJ: Positive and at the same time negative thing of being designer is that you are always at "work" - while asleep, brushing your teeth or sitting in a bus.
FS: What is your "golden rule" in design?
EJ: Make it work.
FS: What skills are most important for a designer?
EJ: Curiosity.
FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
EJ: You just have to do everything on time. Don't waste it on something that does not give you personal result.
FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
EJ: It really depends.
FS: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?
EJ: What do you think about that? Whatever it is: fashion, mechanics or something else, designer has to have opinion about everything... :)
FS: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
EJ: I like projects that give me ability to experiment and try something new.
FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you?
EJ: After bridging studies in Vilnius Academy of Arts I plan to go for Master's degree.
FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
EJ: So far most of the times I was working alone. Nevertheless I like working in team.
FS: How can people contact you?
EJ: Most of the time I prefer using email.
