Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Xenofon Hector Grigorelis (XHG) for A’ Design Award and Competition. You can access the full profile of Xenofon Hector Grigorelis by clicking here.

Interview with Xenofon Hector Grigorelis at Sunday 21st of October 2018
Xenofon Hector Grigorelis
FS: What is "design" for you?
XHG: Design is found in all aspects of everyday life and that is why the designer tries to improve it, by creating functional yet aesthetic objects.

FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
XHG: I like working primarily with wood, often combining it with other materials such as marble, metal and leather. Lately I experiment with more indistinct shapes which demand new technologies in terms of design and construction.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
XHG: During the process of creation, which includes various stages until the completion of the project, feelings develop, alternate, become independent in the end as if they have a substance of their own. Happiness, agony, disappointment, stress all mix together. What truly remains in the end though is the satisfaction derived by the creativity itself.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
XHG: I feel satisfied when I see my efforts recognized and appreciated.

FS: What makes a design successful?
XHG: It’s hard to put it into words. It is something you feel, a sense of appreciation, satisfaction and completeness.

FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
XHG: Designers, being open-minded and full with new ideas, should try to provide society with modern, innovative, and aesthetically perfect solutions in order to improve and facilitate our everyday life. All this should be done with a view to creating a better environment for future generations.

FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
XHG: I often get inspired by observing everyday life as well as analyzing different approaches of things. Some things need to mature in order to develop into shape and form. You have to receive the appropriate stimuli in order to put your ideas in the right place. Past, present, travelling all constitute means of inspirations which help you be more creative.

FS: How do you work with companies?
XHG: Ι work as a freelancer undertaking various projects.

FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
XHG: They need to develop qualities such as determination, patience, perseverance, attention to detail, perfectionism, open-mindedness to name a few. In addition, they should not be afraid to pursue their dreams.

FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
XHG: I have always admired various art forms ever since I was a child. The best thing about being a designer is the immense sense of freedom you get in discovering new paths of expression. On the downside, people often fail to realize the effort and difficulty of the designing process, thus assigning less value to the outcome. So, the designer’s work is often not appreciated enough. However, this should not inhibit the creative work.

FS: What is your "golden rule" in design?
XHG: I strongly believe that for every problem there is a solution. Also, any object could find its righteous place within space.

FS: What skills are most important for a designer?
XHG: Imagination, determination, patience, perseverance and hard work

FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
XHG: There are no time limitations. It really depends on the project and often inspiration. It could last a day, a week, even months. Sometimes you could abandon an idea for years and suddenly you accidentally come across it, you start working on it again and it is ready! This is, after all, the beauty of designing…

FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you?
XHG: One of my future aspirations would be designing a church of modern, yet imposing construction suitable to express the uniqueness of each religion.

FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
XHG: It depends on the project and its complexity. I usually work alone in the development of ideas and designs. However, on several occasions, I work either as a team member by dealing with specific aspects of a project, or I delegate responsibilities to others.

FS: How can people contact you?
XHG: People can visit my website: www.grigorelis.gr, or contact me by e-mail: grigorelisxektoras@gmail.com

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
