Interview with Raynon Chiu at Monday 8th of May 2017 FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer? RC: In 1987, i went to the Tung Fang Design University to learn design and now i have been as an designer for more than 20 years. I think it's persistence. Sometimes i met some problems, and then i sovled them, which push me get progress in this way. FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio? RC: DaE Design/Raynon Chiu Designer Studio(Taiwan) was founded in 2005,which mainly focus on the excellent architecture & interior and soft decoration、furnishing、accessories programs for property developers and hospitality investors.”Do appropriate design measurably for every customer/guest enthusiastic with same idea And persuasion”,which accurately and precisely explains DaE’s constant chase in the career of design and promise to be responsible for each client. DaE’s business covers hotel,salescenter,villa&mansion,prototyperoom,club,public space and small-sized architecture. FS: What is "design" for you? RC: It's my whole world and my favorate thing. FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most? RC: Some challenging work FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company? RC: Product design. FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology? RC: mannual painting, Sketch up and Lumion FS: When do you feel the most creative? RC: In a very quiet night. FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing? RC: The usage of light and shadow. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design? RC: The feeling is complicated, it's hard to describe. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized? RC: I feel excited. FS: What makes a design successful? RC: I think exterior environment is the best design for the interior. And the interior design should be extension from the architecture, so a designer should consider more skills how to combine the interior space and architecture. The interior is part of the exterior, which meets the requirement for aesthetics. FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first? RC: The sense of space. FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment? RC: When we do design, we should try to adopt some measures to solve some problems of pollution or resources consuming, and try to save energy and protect our environment. FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design? RC: It's not just in FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition? RC: On April, I took part in the Milan Design Three-year Exhibition . Next i think it will be in next year. FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations? RC: The design inspiration is from the life that i live, the things that i experienced. FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design? RC: I believe exterior environment is the best design for the interior. I focus on the original spirit and research more possibilities and practical methods as well take advantage of nature as the part of design with less decoration. FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country? RC: I live in shenzhen. Yes, i was born in Taiwan, many elements of Taiwan has influenced me a lot. FS: How do you work with companies? RC: With sincerity FS: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer? RC: I think a good designer should be the life-lover, and his/her design should have the style of themselves. FS: Can you talk a little about your design process? RC: Usually firstly I would discuss with my client according to his/her need. FS: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home? RC: The light, the bed, the carpet, some teapot and my cabinet. FS: Can you describe a day in your life? RC: Just ordinary, nothing special, but i like to chat with myself before go to bed. FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers? RC: I think every designer should insist originality and to form his/her own style. FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer? RC: The good thing is i could transfer my ideal inner world into practice, the drawback is i am too busy to spend time with my family. FS: What is your "golden rule" in design? RC: Minimalism, taking advantage of nature as the part of design with less decoration. FS: What skills are most important for a designer? RC: I think the most important is to keep an innocent heart, and Imagination should be hold. FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.? RC: CAD,3D Max, Photoshop, Sketch up, Lumion. FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time? RC: Actually for designers, desigh is the run competition with time, the life of designer is the overall usage of time and any inspiration of our limited life. FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end? RC: It depends on the scale of project. Some are shorter, mainly about 60 days. FS: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer? RC: What is the project inspiration? FS: What was your most important job experience? RC: It's hard to say which one is the most important. For me, i think any job experience has enriched my life. FS: Who are some of your clients? RC: CITIC,HazensGroup,MerhantsProperties,SPG,LiantaiGroup,Coastal Real Estate,ZhongyunInvestment,StarChina,AVIC,ZhongxiGroup,MTRGroup,China Grand Enterprises and so on. FS: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why? RC: I enjoy the most challenging work and i like adventurous client. If they trust me, I will display the various idear of design for them and they is the most enjoyable time for me. FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you? RC: I have been making a preparation of a Smart Factory, which is unique because it could produce furniture or any good according to the need of our client. Apart from these, I also would like to create a layout corporation so as to an overall and more convenient project. FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself? RC: I will express the design thoughts to my team, and we finish projects together. FS: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
