Interview with Reform Studio at Sunday 6th of October 2013

FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
RS: Yes, we really discovered our love for art during our childhood. As we grow up, we became more passionate to generate ideas and create useful products through design. We Graduated in 2012 from Applied sciences & Arts at German university in Cairo, major Product Design. Now we are designing for our own design studio in cairo, Reform Studio.

FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
RS: Reform Studio is an umbrella of many ‘Re’s you can say, we see design as a recreation of an existing idea, a redevelopment of objects, reusing of materials, reviving of cultures and reforming our world.

FS: What is "design" for you?
RS: Design is a way of thinking, exploring and forming innovative solutions that serve humanity whether it’s economically, environmentally, or culturally.

FS: When do you feel the most creative?
RS: When we create something valuable from nothing.

FS: What makes a design successful?
RS: When it carries a meaning through its simplicity.

FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
RS: 2013, Salone Internazionale Del Mobile, Milano/Italy.

FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
RS: We get inspired from everyday objects around us. Also, observing daily problems is always part of our inspiration, while keeping ourselves updated with the new innovations.

FS: What is your "golden rule" in design?
RS: Always design for cause.

FS: What skills are most important for a designer?
RS: Open minded, seeking diversity, creative, optimistic, high sense of visualization,

FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
RS: Observation, research,3D modeling applications, music, material library, sketch book, colors, and pencils.

FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
RS: We are still trying to find the best way,but mainly creating a time line and trying to be committed to its deadlines.

FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
RS: It depends on the kind of project that we are working on.

FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you?
RS: At the time being we are focusing on our first project ‘plastex’, We want to reduce wastes in Egypt by half in 10 years. We plan to experiment more with the material, develop it and increase its implementations. We have tested the material in the National Research Centre and it proved it can withstand dust, water, sand and heat. It’s very durable and the colors would not even fade away. We see a lot of possibilities for this material that we want to explore. We also plan to start green campaigns to increase public awareness regarding environmental issues.

FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
RS: We love the team spirit.

FS: How can people contact you?
RS: You can contact us through our website: "www.reformstudio.net", Facebook page:"Reform-studio", or by email:"info@reformstudio.net ".

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
