Interview with Attila Jónás at Saturday 13th of April 2013
Attila Jónás
FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
AJ: When I was young , I always wanted to be a car designer. I wanted be a car designer until I become 19. It was 1,5 years ago, when came lots of influences by my teachers, masters and friends. I don't want to close my boundaries only for cars, because now I'm interested in everything. I still want to be a car designer, but I want to try everything and be open-minded in this profession.

FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
AJ: I have my own brand : JA Design. My design studio is my home and work alone there, but it is not and official studio. Only that's how I want to name my own design studio in the future.

FS: What is "design" for you?
AJ: Design is my hobby, my life goal and self-expression.

FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
AJ: When I have to find a solution for problems, it's very exciting for me.

FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
AJ: I haven't got one favorite design, I have lots of favorite designs and not only by famous designers. For example: designs by random designers, student designers from Yankodesign. My favorite designs are always very simple.

FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
AJ: The first thing what I designed for a company is a luxury safe. I'm designing it right now, so this is my first job.

FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
AJ: All materials and technologies have their its beauty.

FS: When do you feel the most creative?
AJ: When I have a stroke of genius.

FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
AJ: Less is more, be as simple as you can. Doing a complicated design knows everyone who wants to design. Doing the simpliest solution : that is difficult.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
AJ: Joy with lots of problems.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
AJ: Only joy for everyone.

FS: What makes a design successful?
AJ: Do you mean that successful designs are beautiful for us or we like that design? If yes, it's very subjective. If you want a formula for it, you can't do it because it is a very complex thing. You can only follow your heart and feelings when you design.

FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
AJ: Is this the simpliest or best solution?

FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
AJ: Everybody knows that we have to be green in this world because it's not gonna end well if we pollute our environment.

FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
AJ: The design is always evolved by technics. I think design evolution is always good if it helps people in everyday life.

FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
AJ: My last exhibition was at my hometown. I want to hold my newt exhibition where lots of people are interested about me. I do not know where is that place yet.

FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
AJ: We have to talk with other people about our thoughts and about their thoughts. (not only with designers, with everyone)

FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
AJ: Less is more and doing the simpliest solution for everything.

FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
AJ: I think that only people around us can affect our design, not a country, where we born.

FS: Can you talk a little about your design process?
AJ: I always need a stroke of genius, then comes the brainstorming, skething , then modelling it in 3D. If I have money to do it in real life, I do it.

FS: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
AJ: My favourite design item is my grandfather's Russian watch and my grandfather's 1969 Jawa Mustang what is mine now. Then my long black coat with my hat and my glasses.

FS: Can you describe a day in your life?
AJ: I cannot describe my days of my life. Every day is different. I work, I sleep, I have fun with my friends when I want or have time for it. When I work a lot , and when the work is done after that I am a little bit lazy sometimes. But after relaxing I always start a new project, because I always have ideas what I have to draw and work on it. I can say that my hobby is my work.

FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
AJ: I am young too so I can say that do not give up your dreams, beacuse the best thing what you can do in your life is fighting for something or someone.

FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
AJ: I do not consider myself ad a designer. Someone is a designer because others consider him/her as a designer. It is like an artist never says on him/herself that : I am an artist! , because if he/she says he/she is not an artist.

FS: What is your "golden rule" in design?
AJ: Find yourself.

FS: What skills are most important for a designer?
AJ: Creativity

FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
AJ: A small notebook with a pen for brainstorming. Then my laptop to digitalize my ideas. (Sketchbook,Photoshop, Rhino 4)

FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
AJ: With lots of coffee and green tea.

FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
AJ: Minimum 1 month.

FS: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
AJ: When I have to find a solution in design. I enjoy it because when I do this , I feel that I work on something important and it is exciting for me beacuse it is like unblinding.

FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you?
AJ: To be between the best designers.

FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
AJ: I have not got a team yet so I work alone.

FS: How can people contact you?
AJ: My email is : foszfor@hotmail.com
