Interview with Ionut Sur

Home > Designer Interviews > Ionut Sur

Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Ionut Sur (IS) for A’ Design Award and Competition. You can access the full profile of Ionut Sur by clicking here.

Interview with Ionut Sur at Thursday 18th of April 2013
Ionut Sur
FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
IS: My passion for design was born in my father's woodworking shop; because of the limited resources available to us we were forced to always improvise and think creatively. This led me to develop a passion for problem solving and acted as the foundation stone for my future as a designer.

FS: What is "design" for you?
IS: Freedom

FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
IS: I especially enjoy industrial design, because of the challenges and the complexity.

FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
IS: Any design that was completed without any compromises.

FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
IS: It was a calendar witch presented (through drawings) the Art Nouveau architecture of my home town. This was in my first year of high school.

FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
IS: I enjoy working especially with wood and plastic. Wood because as a material is alive and demands respect; plastic because is very easy to use.

FS: When do you feel the most creative?
IS: All the time.

FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
IS: When designing I try to focus on all the aspects at once, from ergonomics to marketing. If I focus only on a single aspect, problems soon emerge.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
IS: For me the greatest feeling is when I can hold in my hands the project that has been "trapped' in my head.

FS: What makes a design successful?
IS: When it fully accomplishes its purpose.

FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
IS: Functionality

FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
IS: Design to solve problems, not to create new ones.

FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
IS: The future of design? As long as humanity will evolve, design will evolve at the same rate. Design will stop only when humanity will stop.

FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
IS: Best way of describing my style would be "old school".

FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
IS: The best advice is: Work, Work, Work. The rest will soon follow.

FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
IS: I can only think of positive ones.

FS: What is your "golden rule" in design?
IS: Good research and the Golden Ratio.

FS: What skills are most important for a designer?
IS: I think the most important skill is drawing.

FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
IS: It is important to start the day with a well organized schedule.

FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
IS: It depends on the project.

FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you?
IS: I am looking for a creative and challenging environment.

FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
IS: Because of my current environment I develop all my designs myself. But I enjoy teamwork very much.

FS: How can people contact you?
IS: email: surionut@ymail.com / telphone: +40 0726 140 048

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
