Interview with Ahmad Abedini at Wednesday 21st of March 2018 FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer? AA: I started my studies in Computer Engineering at Iran University of Science and Technology but changed my major to Industrial Design.After graduating from IUST I got my M.A. In Industrial Design from Islamic Azad University, and now I'm continuing my education at Putra University, Malaysia as a PhD student In Industrial Design. FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio? AA: Iranian Industrial Designers Institute, IIDI, Is an institute working on Design and Innovation in Product and Interior design. FS: What is "design" for you? AA: For me Design is Nothing but Thinking, Innovation and Responsibility. FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most? AA: My gratest concern as a designer is Designing the people's everyday life. I mean the things that may not be noticed at the first glance but their importance can be understood with a little attention. FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company? AA: Dashboard of an IVECO minibus FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology? AA: As many other designers, I prefer to start on paper, drawing some rough sketches to find the form and function that I'm looking for. After that I start to evolve the design by some detailed drawings and then it comes to computer. I Prefer to model my designs using rhino3D and render them on 3dsMax FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing? AA: I believe usability and affordance are the most important aspects of a designed product but having a uniqe form and gestalt is also a requirement FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design? AA: Resopnsibility FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized? AA: Feeling useful and then feeling happy about it FS: What makes a design successful? AA: A design will be successful When it saves people from potential dangers or it rescues the culture of a society from disasters FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first? AA: The most important aspect will be having positive influence on the culture and after that ease of use and beauty FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment? AA: I believe that we, designers are one of the most responsible groups towards soceity since we can pervert the people's culture or elevate it by our designs.We are always connected to people, and make them Hopeful or desperate, joyful or depressed, healthy or sick, and all of these are somehow outcomes of our designs FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design? AA: Design is also evolving like other professions and what is concerning about it is the presence of designers who are aware of needs of society FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition? AA: I have not had an exhibition before but I hope with my progress in such competitions I can have my own Design exhibition FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations? AA: Most them come from a tender look to the everyday life's problems and needs FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country? AA: I live in Tehran, IranAnd yes I always try to show Iranian culture as an essence in my designs FS: How do you work with companies? AA: I work on projects FS: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer? AA: Restricting the designer allways comes into tedious results. They should let the designers work on their own inspirations based on the projects. As we can see the innovation in such design competitions. FS: Can you talk a little about your design process? AA: Thinking, Creativity, extraxting innovative parameters, basic sketches, analysis of basic sketches, rivision, finding the best design, rivision of the best design, Final design FS: Can you describe a day in your life? AA: Studying, reading, communication with family, talking with friends, praying FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers? AA: Always design to solve peoples problems, not to gain money FS: What is your "golden rule" in design? AA: Thinking different FS: What skills are most important for a designer? AA: Thinking and morality FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end? AA: A normal sketch with details will take upto 24 hours but if we want to model it and create a 3D render it will take upto 48 hours FS: What was your most important job experience? AA: Interior and home appliance design FS: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why? AA: I enjoy designing everyday life tools and products, I always love to redesign what has became an ordinary part of peoples life FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you? AA: Teaching, Thinking, Designing FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself? AA: I and some of my students have some teamworks specially Mr. Ehsan Sayyad helps me alot with the renderings FS: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about? AA: Yes I do, One is a design regarding a car for the handicapped,another one is a baby carrier and some designs which I will hopefuly present on design competitions FS: How can people contact you?
