FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
EK: When I was 5 years old, two unrelated – from the first sight – events happened at the same time. My parents wallpapered our large living room and bought me a gouache set. One day, when they were at work, I took my new paint, went to the living room, climbed on the couch and started painting as far as I could reach. My parents took me to drawing lessons soon after that. The first lessons were followed by Art school and later Art academy, so, one could say, everything went according to a set plan after the living room accident.
FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
EK: Basically, I work as a freelance graphic designer. I am also a member of a small Lithuanian fashion oriented design studio Studija LT, founded by fashion designers Ieva Seviakovaite and Jolanta Rimkute. Several brands have been born there, namely LT identity, Baltai, ToMaMe. We also work on various other projects. The main mission of Studija LT is to bring together different artists that work in different fields for collaboration. The main objective – to develop the tradition of openly share ideas, learn and develop teamwork. We do a lot of collaborations with business leaders in the different market fields: clothes for PR campaigns, prizes, packaging design etc.
FS: What is "design" for you?
EK: It‘s a way of life, a permanent curiosity in many different areas. Also it‘s an exhausting work, which is crowned with short moments of satisfaction.
FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
EK: Vector based graphics, logotypes, brand identities, collaboration with the fashion industry, co-branding, interdisciplinary projects.
FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
EK: I'm not sure that I understood correctly. Are you talking about my designs or other designers work?
FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
EK: Graphic design for LT identity clothing line (various kind of silk prints).
FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
EK: For design creation, PC platform and vector graphic soft. For production, Pantone color world, letterpress printing, silk prints. In general, technologies that make the item unique.
FS: When do you feel the most creative?
EK: When I feel the positive mood of the creative team.
FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
EK: First of all - solve the problem, formulated by the client. Second aspects: aesthetic, innovative, long-lasting.
FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
EK: If the process is going well, I also feel well. If the process is going slowly or not moving at all... It‘s very annoying.
FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
EK: I feel a fast satisfaction. It is kind of a shopaholic feeling. You wanted, you got, you are satisfied and... you want something else or you are not satisfied with the results anymore and you think you could do better.
FS: What makes a design successful?
EK: Perfect hard skills + sixth sense.
FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
EK: Designers makes an important contribution to the preservation of the environment.
FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
EK: I am currently monitoring an interesting process where scientists, engineers, programmers etc become designers. Scientific professions reach the levels of creativity they have never reached before. Scientists care reating furniture, new materials and collaborating with fashion and so on. The future of design is bright :)
FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
EK: It was last year in my hometown Vilnius, at a local Tourism Information Centre. Studija LT introduced a new clothing brand Baltai (The Balts). A new team exhibition is planned next year.
FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
EK: Clear, vector based, strong structured.
FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
EK: Certainly! For example, the brand of LT identity is basically built on Lithuanian heritage. Its design reflects our ideas of creating the new Lithuanian identity that has enough space for both respect for the past and the desire to take a step into the future, here and now. Our team seeks to analyze the cultural experience of Lithuanian people and look for new symbols and contemporary identity tokens, creatively interpreting them and shaping the positive self-image of a modern Lithuanian.
FS: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
EK: 1. NEC monitor, 2. PANTONE color guides, 3. PEDRALI chairs, 4. Alexander McQueen‘s book Savage Beauty, 5. Pillow with my own graphic.
FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
EK: Do not wait for perfect moment... Take the moment and make it perfect.
FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
EK: Positive aspect of life that you feel the development, each project and inquiry enriches the knowledge of countless different themes. Negative aspects of small and pale against the positive.
FS: What is your "golden rule" in design?
EK: When the client expects 100 percent, do 120 percent.
FS: What skills are most important for a designer?
EK: Hard skills + positive attitude, strong work ethic, time management abilities, self-confidence, flexibility etc.
FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
EK: Paper, pencil, computer, vector graphic software, Pantone palettes, paper catalogues, logo and packaging design books, online sources (blogs, websites) etc.
FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
EK: Yes, it really is a problem. Like most designers, my creative process sometimes takes place 24/7. It‘s a way of life, really.
FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
EK: It depends on a specific task; it can take from 10 minutes up to months.
FS: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?
EK: Friends: can you make a logo for my project? Answer usually being: Yes I can.
FS: What was your most important job experience?
EK: I hope that I'm still looking forward to the most responsible project of life.
FS: Who are some of your clients?
EK: Mostly Lithuanian market leaders in different fields. Information technology, food and beverages, fashion and advertisment industry.
FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you?
EK: Year was full of creativity so need take slow down and make relax. Summer, music festivals, kayak trips.
FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
EK: Both ways. Depends on the project.
FS: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
EK: It usually happens with the design work that we can‘t speak about the majority of current projects, as it has to do with confidentiality.
