Interview with Yoon Chung Namgoong at Monday 21st of May 2012 FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer? YCN: I actually have been studying about traditional Korean Furniture. When I focused on any traditional one, I realized that design is from past and art is from historical emotion. FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio? YCN: I'm studying in Hongik University. Hongik University offers a comprehensive range of undergraduate and graduate programs. The school is best known for its faculty of Fine Arts, arguably the most famed school of Fine Arts and Design in Republic of Korea. FS: What is "design" for you? YCN: I think that "Design" is I and others' history and needs FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most? YCN: I prefer wood working because when I made it I feel the furniture, which I designed, can survive longer than I. It's like a daughter or son. FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it? YCN: "Droog Design" is my most favorite design. I respect their design because they consider people's emotion every single product even though the group is design group not for art. It's not easy to keep the mind especially for designers. Droog (droog is a Dutch word meaning "dry") is a conceptual Dutch design company situated in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Droog works with independent designers to design and realize products, projects, exhibitions and events. Droog has worked with amongst others Marcel Wanders, Hella Jongerius, Tejo Remy, Richard Hutten, Ed Annink and Jurgen Bey. FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company? YCN: Long-lasting for strength and Long run for trend. FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology? YCN: laminated birch plywood / Google sketchup / Korean traditional Joint system for wood(Chinese and Japanese one's are similar: we don't use any glue to join each wood and prior to assembly, grooves were made in structure) FS: When do you feel the most creative? YCN: Sometimes I record my voice, which is about any kinds of ideas, I listen to the voice when I have run out of ideas. FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing? YCN: I do focus more "what the benefit is for user" during designing. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design? YCN: It's exciting and painful at the same time.
