INSPIRATION: We want to make Akbank customers love everyday banking. Therefore, we've started to reimagine and design all digital channels of Akbank. Akbank Mobile is one of the pillars of this process. After all the studies the team went through, we have been thinking about how to make banking smart, social, future-proof and rewarding. We designed Akbank Mobile. With our product’s personalizations and recommendations, a mobile banking experience has never been so clean and intuitive.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Akbank Mobile provides a new perspective on traditional banking which now speaks the users' language with contact thumbnails, simplified actions, phrases, and concepts that are familiar to the user rather than system-oriented terms. Its strength is the human-first approach to building empathy and trust. With its personalized area on the main page, the users can view smart insights to ease their financial life. Also, the users will save time with the AI that thinks in users’ stead.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Normally the communication of users and the bank was mostly composed of one-way interactions. We wanted to create two-way communication and make it free from financial terms. We create a Communication Area on our dashboard. This is an area where our AI engine gives smart insights to the user to reduce stress, help them make more of what they have. Here users are also sharing their feedbacks and needs with the bank. So it is a unique place for valuable two-way conversations.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The design process of the project started in the last quarter of 2018 in Istanbul and had first released in September 2019 in Istanbul. It is an ongoing journey still with updates and user feedback.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: With a human-centric approach, we benefited from a wide range of research methods like market research, questionaries, user interviews, shadowing, heuristic evaluation and design workshops to develop better empathy with users. We turned our insights into creating personas, user stories, journey mappings. To validate the new design we ran several user testings. As a result, we verified our hypothesis on what people would expect from smart, social, intuitive and personalized banking experience.
CHALLENGE: To enable to communication we envisioned, we had to ask the user to give a portion of their dashboard and trust us that it will be worth it. Since mostly the communication the users expect is related to sales, initially users hesitated to read this area. We did a lot of prototyping to find the right size, look and feel and content curation to help users own and love this communication with the bank. We also had a lot of technical challenges to create insights and place them in a dashboard without negative impacts on the performance of the app.
