DESIGN NAME: Powerbox Wanja
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Learning Materials
INSPIRATION: The paper toys are designed using various cube-shaped characters, which are also allocated in different forms on the cover of the textbook. The four study books are designed such that a large cube shape can be shown when they are combined together. The text inside the book also makes use of square design elements to complete a consistent brand identity.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Wanja is a brand that enhances the learning skills of elementary school students using the Powerbox Learning Method, a learning system that splits concepts into digestible bits that are put into boxes to help children learn them more quickly, and to motivate them to do so. Making various box-shaped paper toys provided with the study book not only captures the learners’ interest but also improves their spatial cognition skills.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: From cover designs using cube-shaped characters as graphic motifs to the Powerbox Learning Method used in the text and cube-shaped paper toy making activities, Wanja provides a consistent brand experience. The vivid colors in the cover design provide a bright brand image, while paper toy making delivers an enjoyable brand experience.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project began in Seoul, Korea in August 2019 and wrapped up in January 2020. The series will be sold in Korea beginning in March 2020.

Academic subjects are assigned different colors to make the materials easier to recognize. Areas on the cover design of the study book in particular were coated with glossy material to maximize the visual effect.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Digital natives are unique in being used to consuming short frame-based content items. Using this idea, we developed a system called the Powerbox Learning Method in which learning concepts are split into bits that are organized into square frames. The series also provides paper toy kits of cube-shaped characters to deliver the smile and enjoyment brand value. Twelve different types of toys attract the interest of learners, and collecting them provides learners another level of entertainment.
CHALLENGE: We researched what elementary school students are interested in, while at the same time studying the graphic motifs that can best represent the Powerbox Learning Method. As a result, we selected the cube as the graphic motif, as it can be changed and expressed in different ways. We then selected cube-shaped game characters preferred by elementary school students, which were implemented in the cover design and paper toy kits to complete a consistent brand design.
