DESIGN NAME: Sama
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Furniture Series
INSPIRATION: Inspired by the poetry of whirling costumes worn in Sama ceremonies, the design plays with the geometry of conic sections and makes use of metal bending processes to reinterpret this cultural inspiration through minimal forms that provide a unique touch to living spaces. Produced by skilled wood and metal craftsmen, the collection stands at the intersection of craft production and modern design, aiming to unite craftsmanship traditions of the past and modern aesthetics of the present.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Sama is an authentic furniture series, which provides functionality through simple, yet striking and sculptural forms. Formal integrity and sculptural posture attained by continuing the conic section geometry in the leg form and wooden table details is combined with natural textures of wood and metal to offer a harmonious and pleasant aesthetic experience. The series provides customization according to user needs through alternatives in veneers, colors and dimensions.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Sama series provides functionality, emotional experience and uniqueness through its minimal, practical forms and strong visual effect. The small surface of the coat stand serves as a convenient place to free hands when taking your coat off and the small stool can also be used as a side table. The simple minimal forms provide ease of use and cleaning as well as easy disassembly for renewal & recycling. Provides customization according to user needs and desires by veneer, color and dimension alternatives.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in April 2018 in Istanbul and the furniture series were produced and launched in January 2019. Sama furniture series has been awarded Superior Design Award in Design Turkey 2019. They were exhibited in Design Week Turkey between November 14-17, 2019, at Halic International Convention & Exhibition Center, Istanbul.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Sama series is produced through a combination of industrial and craft production processes. The legs are shaped through metal bending processes and welded to a metal base plate, whereas the solid wood parts are first laser cut and then shaped and veneered by local craftsmen. Electrostatic paint applied to steel tube legs, usage of birch plywood in wooden parts and the application of high caliber, thick, natural wood veneer ensures quality, durability and longevity.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The aim was to transform the cultural inspiration found in the poetry of Sama ceremonies into a functional, modern and minimal furniture series with a unique expression. The conic geometry of the whirling costumes was interpreted in the leg form as 2 opening leg parts that follow the silhouette of a cone. By changing the base diameter and the height of the cone, many modelling trials and prototypes were made with the local craftsmen, in order to optimize the dimensions of the series, to make the furniture pieces balanced, comfortable and easy to use as well as to give the desired visual effect.
CHALLENGE: The major challenge of the project was related to metal production possibilities and technology that was accessible. The main obstacle that had to be overcome was finding a way to produce the bent metal legs in the exact dimensions and bending angles that were desired, using machine assisted craft techniques. This was overcome through many trials and errors through an ongoing experimentation with the local craftsmen.
