DESIGN NAME:
Pluto
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Task Lamp
INSPIRATION:
Pluto was inspired by telescopes, which use tripods and dynamic but stable forms. But instead, I sought to design a light that focuses on the earth instead of the stars.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Pluto keeps the focus firmly on style. Its compact, aerodynamic cylinder is orbited by an elegant handle perched over an angled tripod base, making it easier to position with precision.
Pluto is designed for the office, study or bedroom, with soft-but-focused light that is perfect for writers, illustrators or anyone who is particular about where-and-how their light source meets their working surface.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Pluto is equipped with a dimmable LED bulb that is regulated by a switch attached to its power cord. The amount of light being cast can be controlled to the user's preference.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started as an individual project from March to the end of June 2018 and was developed alongside Gantri's engineering from July 2018 to January of 2019.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Pluto was manufactured by Gantri, a company based in San Francisco. It utilizes corn-based plastics. Making it not only innovative, for using 3d printers in a industrial fashion, but also very eco-friendly.

Bulb: 9W A19 LED Bulb (90+ CRI, 800 Lumens, Soft-white).
Switch: Dimmable switch on-cord. 100-120V US 2-prong plug.
Electrical component certified by SGS for UL and CSA. Manufactured at the Gantri Factory in San Leandro, California.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
We worked on developing a complex form, full of negative space while still facilitating the printing and assembly process.
CHALLENGE:
In order to make the design viable for FDM 3d Printing, we had to test out and split it into various interconnecting pieces that were later assembled together to form the final product.
