DESIGN NAME: Hong Kong Houseware Fair 2019
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Installations
INSPIRATION: Inspiration for both the welcome installation and exhibition hall entrance treatment derived from the official houseware industry tend report. From this, a selection of bold colours finishes and lit outline framework was chosen to produce a language of abstract interior settings. Subsequently, a separate trend display area edited images, materials, bespoke furniture and selected products to form the 4-physical interpretation of the industry’s trend forecast.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: To uplift the image 3 areas were provided by the event organiser inside the Convention and Exhibition Centre building for the 2019 Hong Kong Houseware Fair. First, a welcome installation at the venue’s entrance foyer, followed by an entrance treatment for the exhibition hall entry, then a separate trend forecast display showing 4 future predictions from the industry’s research report.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The flow was a challenge as each area offered for the new design was spread out and an aesthetic link was required to draw the attention of the visitors. Therefore, the welcome installation and entrance treatment’s art direction reflected elements of the main trend display area. This provided a subliminal connection between all 3 spaces and helped elevated the aesthetics of the organisers work at the event.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The 2019 Hong Kong Houseware Fair project duration was 3 months from initial briefing to onsite completion. It was located at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai, Hong Kong and the event ran for 3 days starting from the 20th until 23rd of April 2019.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: A 30m2 x 5m high welcome installation consists of a large LED 3mm pitch screen. Other materials used include reusable aluminium structural system, LED stripe lights, black sticker finish, acrylic panels, digital print, vinyl graphics and biodegradable carpet. The same material specification was applied for the hall entry treatment and trend display area. All constructions and bespoke furniture were tested offsite for quicker reassembly and lit during the 3 days onsite timeline.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The welcome signage 30m2 x 5m high consisted of a large 3mm pitch LED screen. The materials include reusable aluminium system, LED stripe lights, acrylic panels, metal section structure, digital print, black sticker finish, vinyl graphics and biodegradable carpet. Similar materials were applied for the 16 square meters hall entry treatment. RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research began with analysing the trend forecasts for the houseware industry. To relate the theme to this industry, a series of abstract interior settings were built under the Living Art concept for the welcome installation and entrance treatment. Selected colours, textures and lighting elements were taken from the trend forecast reports. This ensured a subconscious form of connection between the first two installations and the separate trend display area located at the concourse.
CHALLENGE: Besides an onsite production of only 3 days, another challenge was finding a design concept to reflect the industry trend and stimulate the visitors. Since the 3 areas provided at the fair were far apart from each other, a common visual thread was required. The solution was to borrow elements from the trend forecast to develop an overarching concept for the 3 spaces provided by the organiser.
