DESIGN NAME: Black Star
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Vessel
INSPIRATION: I made a wallsculpture in wood that had some holes with stars and i saw some ceramic vessel that had many dots on it. I imagined what would happen if i put these 2 elements into one woodturned piece.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The concept of the design is based on the transformation of wood species that have no grain or color into an object vessel pleasing to the eye and additionally achieving an interesting haptic feeling. The design object is handcrafted, beginning with woodturning for forming the outside and hollowing the inside of the object. Drilling and forming the holes into the outer surface comes next, as well as adding color stain. The usage of a pyrographic pen brings further embellishment onto the piece. Finally the object is charred black, resulting in a soft and warm touch, as well as adding contrast.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Put on a shelf or table with some light from the side will show the vessels beauty to the full extend. You can also grab it and feel the texture and material.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: 3 Days in Hanau in my workshop.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Woodturning and alder wood
The alder wood is put on the lathe and the outside form is turned with hand tools, then i drill a hole in the middle and with bend tools i remove some of the inside but i will leave a larger wall thickness, because I will drill many holes using an akku-drill freehand just by eye . With a so called eye-drill-bit i form the cones and with an orange Color stain i paint all the holes. Next step is using a pyrographic pen to add the little stars. Finally i use a gas torch an burn the hole piece black. I put a picture-story into the external link. Please check it out.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I started experimenting with this design on a smaller scale vessel from cherry wood. On that smaller vessel i only drilled the holes and left them flat, and for this one i formed the holes to Little cones, to achieve a more organic look.
CHALLENGE: Starting with a small scale version and producing a bigger one that looks as good as, or better than the small one.
