DESIGN NAME: Sunrays
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Interactive Space Divider
INSPIRATION: The reinterpretation form of the screen aims to bring together in a contemporary way, two important elements in Chinese culture: golden leaf and the Chinese folding screen by presenting the golden leaf as a standalone entity, and not part as a decorative, strictly aesthetic feature. In this way, the golden leaf is being represented as the key element in the interactive space divider, bringing history into present times.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: 薄如纸,轻如翼.
Thin as paper, light as feather. (Chinese proverb)
The installation purposes to keep the golden leaf foil in its original state, intending to reflect its lightness, by portraying an image of floating in the air.
The screen focuses on the dynamics and lightness of the golden leaf itself. Transparent panels, when rotated, enable a rain of golden leaf small particles that will slowly fall down creating a playful environment.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The space divider can be activated by rotating the golden leaf panels, making a transparent panel into a semitransparent one.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was made in Shanghai, China, 2018

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The screens were made using metallic structure, that support the rotating panels. The rotating panels are made using glass panels with metal structure, that hold oil solution with floating golden leaf paper inside.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: One panel (one module) size is 540 x 1875 mm, containing 6 blocks of floating golden leaf with the size of 480 x 300 mm. The total screen contains 6 panels and has 3240 x 1857 mm in size.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The goal of the project was to make the public more familiar with two distinctive Chinese elements: the golden leaf and the Chinese screens. Originated in China, screens date back during the Eastern Zhou period (771–256 BCE), and they were widely spread later on all across Asia, and around the world. These were initially one-panel screens in contrast to folding screens. Folding screens were invented during the Han dynasty (206 BCE – 220 CE), and they were often decorated with beautiful art; major themes included mythology, scenes of palace life, and nature. On the other hand, the golden Chinese leaf was mainly used as finishing surface rather than objects themselves, by coating religious and royal architectural components and furniture. The project aimed to bring these two elements together, making the golden leaf the main character, mesmerising with its uniqueness and lightness.
CHALLENGE: The biggest technical challenge was to find the right balance and speed for the golden leaf to float in the air, in a way that the panels unleash a surreal experience for the user.
