| DESIGN NAME: Bubbles PRIMARY FUNCTION: Cocktail Table INSPIRATION: The inspiration for Bubbles cocktail table was a simple observation of seeing bubbles clump together on a surface. The grouping was lite and iridescent in the sun, a beautiful and fleeting moment in time. The table attempts to capture that moment. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Bubbles is a light hearted interpretation of blowing bubbles. The push & pull of the table surface represents each individual bubble as they would be as a 5 bubble grouping. The frame's suspended tension adds a dynamic element to the table. The tension is designed to add movement to the table. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Bubbles is designed to be a low slung table with built in bowls and plates. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in November 2018 in Seattle and finished in March 2019 in Seattle. FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Furniture Design |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The production technology consisted of a partnership with craftspeople. ACP was the CNC shop that brought the walnut surfaces to life by crafting both sides of the bubble top. 206 Forge was the blacksmith studio that brought life to the base with precise measuring a little bit of fire and a big anvil. Each team member brought a passion and expertise to the project. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 1066mm x Depth 710mm x Height 400mm TAGS: d-s Lab, day-studios, furniture, bespoke furniture, custom furniture, RESEARCH ABSTRACT: - CHALLENGE: The creative challenge for bubbles was to try and capture the essence of the observed bubbles translated into a permanent surface, it is a tall order. Bubbles have an inherent quality of movement, or organic arrangement. The frame tries to aid the surface by having a sense of movement in the structure. The metal forged to appear to be being pulled apart or stretched to the limits.
