DESIGN NAME: Futuristic Hong Kong #1
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Digital Art
INSPIRATION: This series was heavily inspired by my birthplace, Hong Kong. Growing up in the city provided me a lot of perspective on a grassroots level as how citizens' living situations can be so varied, as with a lot of metropolises today. My motives for creating this series is one both a creative, as well as philosophical one – I wanted to highlight both the technological advancement, as well as the disparity of living conditions in conjunction with the rapid progress on HK's society.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: 'Futuristic Hong Kong' is a series of digital art pieces which were heavily inspired by the close-knit architecture of Hong Kong, and the sub-genre of Cyberpunk. These two themes also come hand-in-hand with the almost claustrophobic way of living, as well as the gradual suppression of society as it is commonly associated with the dystopian nature of Cyberpunk.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This is a piece of art which the viewers should submerge themselves into. Look and explore into the details, the energy, the vibrancy.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started remotely between Hong Kong and Frankfurt am Main back in 2017/8, and it was completed in 2018.
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Digital Painting, using Photoshop

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research came from both my living experience, born and bred in Hong Kong, to my interest in the cyberpunk genre. I looked into topics such as concept art, popular culture in cyberpunk, films and books, as well as taking in the aesthetics from local life in the metropolis.
CHALLENGE: The hardest part of the design activity was to merge something, a place, which is so well-known and local to me, into something which has only been imagined, with the use of flying vehicles, and other possible forms of technology that would be associated in future living.
