| DESIGN NAME: Armonia PRIMARY FUNCTION: Chair Collection INSPIRATION: The Balance of the structure represents the harmony between two objects and reflects this concept to the users since a single structure is intended for two. The union of two beings generates balance in life and harmony in the environment. So, to effectively spread this message, it came the Idea to adapt 3 different designs to the same structure that can be placed and set apart visually in several environments. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Armonia is a tubular structure, created by the composition of two geometric shapes that are linked together to remain in balance. The structure is designed to shape a functional, unconventional and iconic piece of furniture. Its versatility gives life to a collection of 3 chairs, easy to adapt to a variety of contexts. These designs help to highlight in a unique way the main element of the project (the structure), showing in a diverse and elegant way its tubular silhouette. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The idea behind Armonia Structure Design Collection is to generate a sense of togetherness inviting two people to share moments (space and feelings) while interacting with the environment and with another being, feeling harmony around you. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project started at the end of 2017 in Colombia, in 2019 the first full-scale prototype was made and will be exhibited for the first time in the Fuorisalone- Tortona District, during Milan Design Week 2019. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The tubular structure is made of stainless steel and optionally painted in satin black. The tube has an outside diameter of 25mm and a wall thickness of 3mm. Given the shape, dimensions, and proportions of the structure, 3 chair design proposals were developed with the purpose of fulfilling the concept by adapting the chairs to several contexts. Armonia-One, is a contemporary style loveseat, made by two triangular puff seats and a backrest, all with an internal wood structure, filled with foam and covered by Leather/Alcantara. Armonia-Urban is a bench made by 14 oak wooden boards with natural, cherry or walnut finish. The boards are fixed to the structure in an invisible way, thanks to the steel sheets that are located inside the woods and welded with precision to the structure. Armonia-Crystal is transparent polycarbonate chair, made by 14 polycarbonate boards. As Armonia-Urban the boards are fixed to the structure through invisible steel sheets. This design reflects the contrast between the combination of heavy-solid and light-transparent materials. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 1200 x Depth 530 x Height 900 mm TAGS: Harmony, Balance, Leather, Wood, Polycarbonate, Tubular Metal Structure, Comfortable, Versatile, unconventional, Colombian Design. RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The ideation process was mainly carried out starting from a symmetric matrix, with which was possible to create different paper models. This methodology allowed visualizing the different possibilities of the creation of several products, exploring their form, proportion and balance through the fold. This way was born the idea of representing the concept through the union of two triangular bases that need each other to remain in balance. Then the design was modified to achieve a more realistic appearance, connecting all the contours in a tubular circuit system. CHALLENGE: During the development of the structure, in order to observe the manufacturing process of each of the joints, through cutting, welding and bending specific angles, was carried out an analysis by elaborating a 1:4 scale prototype. As result, it was verified that the structure had no difficulty in its manufacture, but the equilibrium resulted unstable in case the weight pressure was applied only to one side (because of the rounded foothold). She started her professional career as Industrial Designer at El Bosque University in Bogota, and she achieved with honors the Master Degree in Product Design at Domus Academy in Milan. Her fundamental tool in the execution of Design is based on the User-Product Interaction; This permits to obtain a clear vision of the practical, aesthetic and communicative function of the product, leading to a clear result for the user experience. The passion for her profession has motivated Alejandra to carry out projects in different areas of design, from the creation of everyday objects, furniture, accessories, packaging and branding, to interaction and interface design projects. |
