DESIGN NAME: Connection Taiwan
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Conference Event Poster
INSPIRATION: The theme of the conference is Connection Taiwan. For the poster, the designer employed gradient shapes to correlate the outline of the island with circular globe as a way to establish connection. In addition, the gradient outlines resemble contour lines and signal waves, symbolizing communication between Taiwan and other nations.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The theme of the conference is Connection Taiwan, which aims to reintroduce Taiwan into the global context to expand the horizon of Taiwanese literary discourse. The "world" has become an unavoidable topic in contemporary international humanities studies. As trans-nationalism stresses the crossing of geographical boundary, world imagination focuses on expanding the range and scale of literary text, which will turn Taiwanese transnational literary discourse into a more comprehensive study.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The shape of the island brings out the image of Taiwan vividly, which is then connected gradiently to the "globe" for symbolic implication.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: National Chung Hsing University, October 13-14, 2018
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The poster employs gradient shapes to bring out the theme, correlating the shape of Taiwan with the globe. The gradient transformation blurs the outline of Taiwan visibly. As a result, different colors and widths were tried during the process to achieve satisfactory results.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Poster: 594 x 841 mm; Invitation: 70 x 112 mm; Glass: 125 x 88

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Taiwan is a relatively small island that is rich in cultural resources. While researching for the project, one of the main objectives has been to improve Taiwan's international recognition. In practice, the designer turned the contour outline of the island into gradient connection that links Taiwan and the global world together through symbolic communication.
CHALLENGE: The choice of using gradient lines and colors made post-press finishing a potential challenge. For instance, hot foil stamping or single-color printing would require extra effort in order to best preserve the original design. So far the best solution has been cold foil.
