DESIGN NAME: Iperbolica
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Armchairs
INSPIRATION: Iperbolica is the result of the need to experiment with shapes, colours and techniques, to go beyond the confines of the engineered construction of the objrct and experimentation on the material. The quest becomes a striving to comprehend the design process through a method, straining between ivention and science, which leads to the experimentation of new solutions, becaude in design it is the project that matters, i.e. The intentionality of which the deriving solid object is merely the shadow.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: These armchairs, entirely made of silicone, abandon all kinds of support and inner structure to use air as a structural element and, subsequently, the elastic polyurethane foam, which is blown inside to create the shape and make it solid, but at the same time soft and inviting. These armchairs are hyperbolic because they go beyond design and beyond the project, in the implementation and construction of the form itself.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Iperbolica becomes a discovery of textures, ductility, color mixtures in incandescent polychromes and combinations. They are fascinating objects in terms of shape, colours, construction and the energy that they convey. The gradually altered moulds give form and life to the armchairs that are not only different in terms of decoration, but also in different ergonomic solutions.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The research started in 2008 with the armchair Scaccomatto presented by Dilmos in Milan, followed in 2009 by Cubik, the first inflatable model (Plart Naples) and by Damien, the first armchair dedicated to an artist (FSRR Turin and PAD Paris), then by Gerhard and Alberto in 2010 (Dilmos Milan). The series of eleven armchairs was presented at the Milan Triennale on occasion of Milan Design Week. The project evolved then into Mondrian armchair, exhibited at Superstudio during the M D W 2017.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The project has been entirely self-produced and realized through the development of a building method, exploiting the characteristics of the silicone. The technique used revers the phases of the decorative process, first making the decoration, followed by the support and finally the shape.
Material: acetic thixotropic silicone, powder of colored pigments, elastic polyurethane foam, cotton reinforcing textile.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: dimensions:
width 1021-1216mm
depth 800-1044mm
height 800mm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research moved from a simple solid figure, the cube, made using a wood support.
The project gradually evolved with the moulds and with the challenge of abandon all kinds of structure, then the main step has been the replacement of air with injected elastic polyurethane foam: stable and safer, Iperbolica armchairs became functional objects in every respects.
The hyperbole to which the collection refers is the wish to take experimentation on material and forms to its most extreme consequences.
CHALLENGE: There was three important design phases:
The calculation of the thickness of the individual modules and the edges that define the structure and make the shape with the filling of air or elastic polyurethane foam.
The development of the welding techniques of the parts, maintaining the continuity of the decoration.
The construction and development of the mould for injected elastic foaming in collaboration with Mauri Company.
