| DESIGN NAME: Fastback PRIMARY FUNCTION: Electric Guitar INSPIRATION: The design of the main electric guitar icons design has remained almost unaltered since the 50s. This guitar features an alternative based on a new design language greatly inspired by the shapes of a Ferrari. Form and function united in a lightweight and balanced body sculpted through elegant lines and athletic shapes with sense of flow and speed. An expression of the passion through colour and shape, a new concept projected to the future without loosing its classical roots. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: New concept with sculpted shapes greatly inspired by sport cars design language. Ergonomic, lightweight and comfortable to play, it is innovative enough to reach new horizons and conservative enough to be welcomed by the varied tastes of guitarists around the world. It features a powerful and versatile sound born from its handcrafted B&B Classic 61 pickups and a skillful manufacturing with a careful selection of woods and components. Designed for a medium production at reasonable cost. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Just plug it to a nice amplifier and jump on stage. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in September 2018 and finished in February 2019. It has been developed in Gijon, Spain. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The design started from concept sketches on a blank paper and continued with Photoshop, Autodesk Alias CAD surface modeling, rendering and body milling with a cnc machine. Some little parts have been also cut and engraved with laser machine. Finally it has been manually sanded, painted, polished, assembled and adjusted. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Weight 3,1Kg. Alder body finished in Apple Candy Red and lacquered with gloss polyurethane. Pickups and electronics: handcrafted Custom B&B Classic 61 Hot Humbuckers with Split-Coil. Maple neck with rosewood fingerboard, modern C shape and fnished in gloss urethane. Full contact Babicz Hardtail bridge. Scale length of 25.5 inches. Master Tone and Master Volume with Push/Pull Split-coil. 3-Position Toggle switch. Kluson chromed 6L with auto-lock machine heads. TAGS: guitar, electric guitar, guitar design, guitar future, electric guitar design, fastback, david flores RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The experience developing other electric guitars provided a solid knowledge background that helped a lot to keep an accurate control of this design and all its characteristics at every design stage. It was essential to obtain high quality standards in terms of manufacturing, sound, ergonomics and playability. The neck and body shapes were developed with Cad advanced automotive surface modeling techniques that allowed to obtain the complex shapes that define the Fastback essence and otherwise would be almost impossible to obtain with such quality level. CHALLENGE: The global taste of the electric guitar world is quite conservative so the first challenge was to reach new horizons with a really new, attractive and lightweight design but taking always care of maintaining it behind the "Most Advanced Yet Acceptable line". The next challenge was a hard and long CAD surface modelling work with lots of concept variations to develop its complex surfaces and all the engineering details, which was followed by a careful cnc and handmade manufacturing process. NAME: David Flores Loredo PROFILE: David Flores Loredo is a passionate Engineer and Designer specialized in Musical Instruments Design. Graduated from Mechanical Engineering at University of Oviedo, he pursued his passion for Design moving to Barcelona, where he coursed a Master in Automotive Design in the ELISAVA Superior School of Design. He worked as Designer at the SEAT Design Center in the Interior Design Team and then he moved to Gijón, where he works since several years as Mechanical Engineer. Highly influenced by the beautiful organic shapes of nature as well as by the fascinating fluidity, tension and speed of automotive design, he tries to project sculptural beauty, elegance and dynamism on all his designs. As a designer, he shapes the ideas into artistic concepts and sketches on a blank paper, but as an engineer he transforms them into real working objects through a complete creation process. He looks forward to continue designing the electric guitars of the future. |
