PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Sideboard
INSPIRATION:
A monolith, trapped in a net, sailing on the water with the moon on the horizon and a small strip of land, an island, to keep him company.
An Arca, by definition, domestic container in which to guard something important, valuable, to miss time making memories.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The cupboard is composed of a solid oak reticle in which staying three large full extension drawers which can be equipped according to the intended use.
The top in extralight thermoformed glass mimics the fluidity of water offering small compartments to be filled with the lamp Luna, the vessel Island (optional) and with various decoration, or to use as pocket emptier.
The methacrylate supports suspend the cupboard emphasizing his ideal float.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
the glass top offer compartment to be filled with accessories, but the core the hidden storage conpartments.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in October 2015 in Taranto, Italy. The fullscale prototype was made in Taranto and completed in June 2016

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
During the concept development, I wanted to highlight the contrast between the precision of woodworking and the empirical and handicraft thermoforming of glass. Starting from the base of the sideboard, walking along the oak strips, you arrive on the surface where the glass becomes the protagonist, as if the shape of the strips were a consequence of the deformation of the glass
CHALLENGE:
The most complex challenge was faced during glass processing. The handmade thermoforming is obtained by placing the glass plate on a shape placed inside the oven. The glass attains at the plastic state thanks to the heat and tends to take the shape of the mold by gravity.
There is no way to stop forming at a precise moment, because it’s necessary to consider the cooling time, during which the glass continues to deform. During the realization of the prototype, various tests were carried out until the right deformation was obtained.

I am truly captivated by Arca, a Sideboard designed with such precision and craftsmanship. Giuliano Ricciardi has created a masterful piece that perfectly blends the solid oak reticle with the extralight thermoformed glass top.
