DESIGN NAME: Shell
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residential Garden
INSPIRATION: The design of this garden was inspired by its location. The plot is located by the Baltic Sea in an elevated area where the wind blows constantly. The motif of the shell, its shape and the synonym shelter (shell-ter) determined the shape of the garden layout.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A project for the development of a private garden around a small residence near the sea. A plot with beautiful views and with constantly blowing strong wind. The project set up a combination of these two opposing problems so that it would be a pleasure to be in the garden and enjoy the views. The stainless steel wood shelf has been bent into a wave shape and is mounted on a stone wall, which is a smooth extension of the retaining walls. In addition, the shelf provides additional protection against wind and fencing.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The garden has an elevated terrace, from which there is a view of the sea. On windless days, you can admire the sea and drink coffee. Most days are windy here, so the sunken garden is surrounded by a few lines of hedges, ornamental grasses and trees is a peaceful place with a view of the garden

This garden won 1st place in the Polish Landscape Contest 2014 in the Private Gardens category. The garden was also presented in a garden-related television program.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research concerned finding a place on the plot and the best possible cover from the winds. At the same time, the search focused on the most effective shielding and opening the view of the house and garden. The solution was to plant several layers of hedges
CHALLENGE: The very specifics of the plot was a great design challenge. From one hand the wind blew from every side required covering the garden. On the other hand, beautiful views of the sea, which could not be overlooked. I had to combine these two mutually exclusive issues.
