DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Out of the Blue

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Clay Animation

INSPIRATION:
The inspiration came from the team's faculty guide, who suggested the theme of fisherman. However for stylistic and script ideas, Inspiration for this short film was taken from other stop motion films such as, Pogo's pingu and Isle of Dogs.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
It was a project with a time constraint of just 1.5 weeks. Given the prompt of "fisherman";, a story was then built around that. It was meant to help entertain people in a funny heart warming sense. Something that a person with a short attention span can also enjoy. It was also the team's first ever attempt working with stop motion, so that in itself provided a lot of challenges.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
As a comedic animated film, its intent is to simply entertain it's viewers, especially those with a shorter attention span. As days progress, people are busy with daily life, so a short funny clip would definitely add to their emotional well-being.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
This classroom project took a total of one and a half weeks, from late November to early December. Location is Pune, India.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Movie, Video and Animation Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The team got together and first sketched out story boards, and once that was finalized, the creation of the set and characters began. The materials, tools, and software used were as follows: Modelling Clay, Wire, Paper Mache, Cloth, Adobe Premiere Pro, Dragon Frame, Canon 1300D, Canon 700D.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
1080P HD 16:9 1920X1080, Model Set: 400 mm x 800 mm x 150 mm , Main Character Model: 60 mm x 60 mm x 200 mm

TAGS:
stopmotion, claymation, animation, student, group project, fishing

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The group was given a prompt to conduct research on. This theme for this classroom project was "fishing". Research on story-line was first conducted which was then followed with the creation of the set. The team also had to break down the story board multiple times to obtain one that would fit in under a minute. Research was conducted on how to create movable character models. The team also experimented with various materials first, to see which material worked best with the set. Then finally, tested out various editing software and recording equipment, until the final outcome was produced.

CHALLENGE:
The challenge with this project was the time restraint. The group had to really work day in and day out to get everything together. Another challenge was due to the lighting set up, the group had to make sure the clay models in were not melting. Furthermore, it was the team's first ever attempt at something even remotely close to stop motion animation, so that in itself provided a few challenges.

NAME:
MAEER's MIT Institute of Design

PROFILE:
MAEER's MIT Institute of Design, (Pune, India) started its operations in August 2006, guided by the days leading minds in the Indian design education, with a plan to develop its identity as a research & training institution of highest international quality. It is into this kind of stimulating and inspirational environment that mentors from various design related disciplines are invited to interact with the design learners and challenge their young minds to explore newer territories that should complement and reinforce their ongoing design learning. Here are some of the disciplines from which these mentors would be selected: bio-mechanics, alternative energy systems, linguistics (semiotics), performing arts, plastic arts, design anthropology, sociology, perception and cognitive psychologies and several more. The mentors would ensure that the level of interaction is such that it eventually leads to a learning that is comprehensive, sustained and focused in depth, and directly or indirectly design related.
