DESIGN NAME: Murano 5.0
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Amphoras
INSPIRATION: The MURANO 5.0 collection was born thanks to the simultaneous occurrence of two events: the discovery of a new type of silicone that allows to obtain amazing transparencies and high consistency and a visit to a Murano furnace where I could meet some of the best master glassmakers. Fascinated by their consolidated gestures, their knowledge and their history, I tried to imagine how I could use this new material and my processing techniques to create an illusion.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Large amphorae made entirely from a single block of silicone that seem to be made of glass but are elastic, unbreakable, can be moved easily and try to match the typical poetry of Murano glass.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Murano 5.0 amphorae are interior decorative elements. Their elastic consistency animates them with a single touch. The transparency of the material collects the colour of the light.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in September 2016 and it was presented in May 2017 at Venice Design in Venice.
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Fine Arts and Art Installation Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The material: solvent free two-component silicon rubber. Colour: transparent. Consistency: liquid. Processing: cold. The method of own manufacture: triangular veining and fusion in overlapping layers. The veining of the silicon work as both structure and decoration, yielding works of these sizes while limiting the weight.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Amphora 1 height 1600mm diameter 420mm
Amphora 2 height 2000mm diameter 520mm
Amphora 3 height 2300mm diameter 600mm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research wants to be the dialogue between the two materials and the ancient crafts. The collection was created with the intention of accompanying the history of Murano’s mastery. The objects were made entirely in silicone and made through the use of gestures inspired by master glass makers. The final result achieves the visual perception given by glass and the soft consistency given by an elastic material in a process between imitation and invention.
CHALLENGE: The greatest difficulties for achieving the result were definitely the search for the most suitable silicone to achieve the right balance between consistency and transparency, the calculation of the shape and size of the veining useful for making the design self-supporting, light, and aesthetically suitable for the project of achieving a monolithic object of such size that it is totally free of welding.
