DESIGN NAME: Woodie Luna Smart Lamp
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Smart Lamp
INSPIRATION: We combine wireless charging, cutting edge technology and Italian design to create products that are unique and extraordinarily useful.
Luna was inspired by user’s needs; the first idea was to integrate a wireless charger together with a lamp in order to provide everything you need on your nightstand or desk in one device. In the development process, voice assistant got more and more popular. We wanted to raise the bar higher, so we decided to face this challenge too and join the arena of voice services embedding Amazon Alexa Voice Assistant without compromising on the Design.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Luna Smart Lamp is the first lamp that integrates Amazon Alexa voice services and Qi Wireless Charging.
Luna is a fresh take on an ancient wisdom, revisiting the classical lamp by creating new layers of technology: light, music, wireless charging and Alexa functionality all in a single design.
With Amazon Alexa built-in, Luna is a future proof product.
The artificial intelligence is on a steep progress curve, constantly updating and learning our habits and tastes. Alexa features skills, similar to smartphones Apps, that give to Luna hundreds of potential new functions every day.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Alexa set up:
1) Download Luna App
2) Plug in Luna and connect it to Wi-Fi via the App.
3) Start talking to Alexa by logging in your amazon account.
4) You can control light and volume just using your voice.
Place your smartphone on top of Luna or plug it to the USB-C port to charge it.
Alternatively, use the capacitive touch buttons to set light intensity and volume.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in 2017 in Milan. Since then the team has been in constant research, development, licensing, prototyping and iteration stages until now. A working prototype was exhibited at CES 2019 in Las Vegas and Maison & Objet 2019 in Paris.
The project is going to be launched with a crowdfunding campaign in May 2019.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The design was conceived directly on a parametric software, that gave us the possibility to shape the product as it was being crafted. Blow molding injection allow us to generate our geometry with no junction signs on the diffuser surface. LED light is first conveyed in a PMMA cylinder that distributes the emission to the outer diffuser with a perfect and smooth illumination. Amazon’s official system integrator partnered with us in order to develop specific hardware solutions that would fit our design needs.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: An experience-based approach is at the foundation of our design process.
Collecting data with surveys on online communities of clients and friends regarding both design and functionalities from around 250 people from different ages, countries and backgrounds. Constant research of tech trends lead us to implement Alexa voice system before it was adopted by a mass audience.
Design was a continuous fine tuning of the model according to the hardware implementation needed and UI/UX perfection. We 3d printed hundreds of different models to validate concepts.
CHALLENGE: User interface and user experience were the biggest challenges.
Fitting so many functions in a small object meant it would also require a rich physical interface that had to be coordinated without compromising the user experience. From a tech point of view, working with new technologies meant having room to invent and improve new solutions.
The biggest challenge was to embed multiples functions in a design and let them coexist perfectly.
The result was a 5 capacitive touch buttons UI and a 126mm diameter per 78mm height product. The most compact device with so many features.
