DESIGN NAME: Musical Attachment
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Documentary Film Saving Culture
INSPIRATION: The passion of Katie Ammann on music education really inspired me a lot! Following the closure of a prominent mill, downtown Roanoke Rapids has lost business’ in waves. “It’s really hard I think for a town to watch a lot of its favorite things go,” she said. She has devoted herself to rejuvenating the historic downtown by building the community around music.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Katie Ammann has a true passion for teaching music. In 2011, this energetic young woman opened the music school in Roanoke Rapids.
She loves seeing her students grow. “It’s not about being perfect, it’s about always being better than you were the day before.” She loves “to help people understand that life is about growth.”
Her school has students from various economic and racial backgrounds. She also provides free summer camps, free string classes, and affordable private classes.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The first step, try to find a person who is willing to share his/her personal story. The second step, prepare the interview with the interview protocol and get feedback from other professionals. Third, conduct the interview. I was the interviewer and conduct the interview based on the protocol. There were two cameras to shoot the interview. One was set really close to the interviewer to catch interviewee's face. The second one was set a little further to catch the interviewee and the background/context. The fourth step is to shoot clips as many as possible, including both detailed and general content. I joined several classes and try to catch the interaction between my heroine and her students. Fifth, try to find the background music matching the content. Next, edit the interview and create a storyline using Adobe Premiere. Then, edit all video clips and combine them based on the story line. Finally, use Adobe Illustrator to beautify each frame color.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was conducted in Roanoke Rapids, starting in May 2015. It took 2 months to shoot and collect all video clips and interview. Then, it took 2 years to finally edit and finish it.
