DESIGN NAME: OPEN 45
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Credenza
INSPIRATION: The inspiration for the Open 45 was to provide a greater ease of use and retrieval for stored items.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Open 45 is designed to enhance and encourage the usability of stored items. This design functionality focuses on ease of use as the items sit at a 45 degree angle and comfortably 'look up' at the user. This fully customizable piece features modular shelves and dividers, a hidden cord channel and removable vented side panels for interior air circulation. The shelves rest on vibration isolation material ensuring music played on this credenza is clear and crisp.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The open top storage provides full visibility allowing for simultaneous storage and display while neatly concealing cords and other items such as electronics that may be better suited beneath the shelf. Spines of books and records 'look up', interacting with the user without the need for physical manipulation of the piece (ie. crouching down, opening cabinets, rummaging through dark spaces to find an item). The shelves and dividers move with ease, allowing effective interior access.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Project started in 2017 and released end of 2018

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: This design was born out of necessity. The designer and his family were seeking a more functional way to display their books, records and turntable. Items stored away in a traditional credenza tend to fall into the realm of 'out of sight, out of mind.' The open top and 45 degree angle of this piece works to solve this issue. The design also addresses the need for personalization with a modular setup including movable shelves and dividers.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: This piece comes in two standard sizes:
(1.) 2133.6mm Width x 546.1mm Depth x 533.4mm Height
(2.) 1524 mm Width x 546.1mm Depth x 533.4mm Height
*Also available in custom sizing.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The design research was done through prototyping, personal use and practical experimentation via trial and error. The designer consulted with a range of user types including audiophiles who informed the decisions to accommodate turntables. Various sound isolation materials and techniques were explored in order to come to the final and most effective iteration. After exploring different methods, the choice was made to magnetize the ends, allowing the cleanest closure and a joyful ease of use.
CHALLENGE: To provide a modern storage solution which enables the ultimate ease of use in a clean and individualized way.
