DESIGN NAME: Turning
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Multifunctional Chair
INSPIRATION: As world population is projected to continuously grow, current trend of shared housing, and micro-apartment seek new relationship between how furniture use can adapt to multiple function to optimize space use.
Responding to the need for shared living spaces, Turning has a two-in-one feature that can be transformed into a lounge chair and a bar stool. Its purpose is to save space by reducing several seating needs into one.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: There has been a fixed idea of what a chair can be, typically a stationary chair featuring one function. Turning serves a dual purpose that can be converted to either a lounge chair or a bar stool. Both positions are ergonomically and functionally dimensioned simultaneously with ideal heights, widths and angles that not only offers comfort but also its stackable features. When two positions are grouped, it can be arranged by having the lower seating heights in front for events.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This two-in-one chair switches its role based on users need, simply by turning it. For space saving use in a micro-dwelling unit, it can be used either in a living room or in the kitchen and bar area. For eventful spaces, two chairs can be positioned and arranged to have a lounge configuration, which has lower seating height (372 mm), in front while having the bar configuration, which has higher seating height (713 mm), in the back without obstructing views.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The initial idea was first conceived in Spring 2011 at Pratt Institute in New York, by investigating different types of seating typologies such as a desk chair, a bar stool, and a lounge chair. The final design of the Turning resulted in a two-seating position that resulted in a stackable lounge chair and a bar stool was developed in November 2018 in New York responding to the needs of a micro-housing and multi-purposeful design lifestyle.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: It is fabricated in two bent metal tubes intersected and welded together as a main structure frame combined with one laser cut metal sheet that is bent and welded sinuously along the structure as a seating surface and back support. Lastly plastic feet parts are added to cap the tubes.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Lounge Chair: 730 mm X 482 mm X 643 mm (372 mm seat height)
Bar Stool: 640 mm X 482 mm X 713 mm (713 mm seat height)

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research abstract is to combine a lounge chair and a bar stool in one configuration which users can customize seating needs while reducing space use.
CHALLENGE: The first challenge was to find a configuration that ergonomically work as both a lounge chair and Bar stool. A number of studies were conducted in drawings to estimate the optimal angles and lines to satisfy both seating positions. The second challenge was making the unit stackable to optimize mobility, transport, and storage space in various indoor and outdoor space and events. Lastly, three-dimensional iterations were investigated to meet the two parametric design conditions.
