DESIGN NAME: Fazlani Residence
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residential Apartment
INSPIRATION: Set in an unassuming and bustling neighbourhood of Agripada in Mumbai Central, our challenge was to design a contemporary luxury home mindful of its ecosystem.Prominent mosques in the vicinity and the modern Islamic architecture of the building itself became the cornerstone of our design.Contemporary hand crafted interpretations of traditional Islamic design elements engaged with the new and old, evolving into an experiential design idiom for Modern Islamic Interiors.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: In the drawing room, juxtaposition of octagons creates an imposing ceiling feature. A bay window seating flanking the dining is enveloped in a hand carved wooden lattice arch. The majlis room is characterized by a hand-stitched fabric ceiling and low seating sofas punctuated with mirrored armrests and wall-mounted lattice screens. The master washroom with glass mosaic tiles on ceiling and floor and hand-cut artistic mosaic installation in swirls on a curved wall is a composition in gold.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The project required a significant research into Islamic culture and designs and was an enriching experience.Traditional islamic design elements such as arches, metalwork, lattices, mosaics and Islamic geometric patterns were woven into a contemporary composition.
CHALLENGE: Execution of metalwork, leather and gold mirrors in the highly humid climate of Mumbai was the biggest challenge. Protective coats were applied to metalwork and the leather. On the other hand, the gold mirrors were altogether replaced with gold acrylic.
