DESIGN NAME: Athena Notes
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Recyclable Notebinder
INSPIRATION: Binders are found in desks and offices all over the world. Students use them seasonally, and they are produced and discarded with school trends: over 100,000 tons of binders are made each year in Europe alone. But this everyday product is layered with plastics and more - it cannot be conventionally recycled, adding millions of kilograms to landfills annually. Every recyclable Athena Notebinder used and reused saves plastic from the environment, and directly supports a more sustainable future.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Athena Notebinder is made entirely from recycled stainless steel and cardboard, uses 30% less materials than a traditional binder to fit in any bag, and can be easily recycled thanks to its detachable parts. The covers can simply be swapped for new ones if they get scuffed, and beautifully designed to follow any trends, prolonging use. The unique binding bracket fits standard A5/A4 products and the rings swivel so the front cover can flip back to provide a comfortable writing experience.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Mixed materials binders create over 100,000 tons of landfill every year. Athena is a simple step for a more sustainable lifestyle. It can be used as a binder or spiral notebook: the front cover flips back to write comfortably, and the rings open to refill with the paper of your choice. The covers can be swapped when scuffed. All of its parts are detachable and recyclable. It is 100% recycled, but uses 30% less materials than other binders to be light for your bag and the environment.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project began in July 2018 and was completed in February 2019 - and we want to carry on making greener stationery that does more for years to come.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The front and rear covers are manufactured from CNC cut printed recycled thick paperboard type cardboard. The rear cover features CNC milled grooves and recesses to attach the binding band. The binding band is made of laser cut spring-grade stainless steel sheet formed to create the end clips for attaching to the rear cover, and the pin-hinge joints for the binding rings. The rings are traditional steel latch-type binding rings, which are plated to match the band.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The recyclable notebinder was an early evidence. The scale of the environmental challenge dawned on me as I sat at work, ripping pages from my spiral notebooks for the paper bin, and still their mangled covers joined the binders in the no recycling pile. We started with focused surveys, abandoning aluminium and bamboo, too costly and heavy. Then followed 8 models/prototypes to achieve the vision of a plastic-free modular binder that met all other practical and environmental requirements.
CHALLENGE: We set out to create a truly sustainable folder and notebook replacement which would be plastic-free, made entirely of recycled materials, and which could be easily recycled in any country. The biggest challenge was that it needed to fit a very broad range of users, be light enough for daily use, resilient, and use standard paper to be affordable and practical. It needed to be versatile and customisable to suit any settings, all without the flexibility, low weight, and low price of plastic.
