PRIMARY FUNCTION: Chak Duk Chang Store
INSPIRATION: The Architect responded with a poetic design that integrated ornamented art installation with culture and space.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: LX Studio International Limited was tasked with designing a new multifunctional workspace for the Cha Duk Chang Children’s Cantonese Opera Association, Non Profit Organization at the newly renovated industrial building, The Mills in Hong Kong of 1,650 square feet space includes cafes, exhibition zone, classroom, and workspace.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The motion of the bamboo art ceiling serve as a guidance
to welcome the visitors to enter and explore the headdress exhibition area and the internal multi-functional workspace.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project is located in The Mills, Tseun Wan, Hong Kong. The design was started in June 2018 and the construction delivery was completed in December 2018.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: A play on Bamboo: By combining the digital design technologies and the local craftsmanship, the new store design seamlessly blended into the architectural context and the surrounding environment with its natural colour tone backdrop and the use of bamboo; 1,800 bamboo tubes were pre-cut, pre-drilled and slotted into threaded rods with plastic tube spacers in reference to the installation of headdress handicraft.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The narrative involved the research of the costume and stage design of Cantonese Opera. To respect the elegance of traditional Cantonese Opera headdress & the topology of various Bamboo Theatres; the project integrates the movement of tassel in headdress and the materiality of the Bamboo Theatres to create a new topology of the space for Cantonese Opera.
CHALLENGE: The project combines art installation and parametric design to produce a complex ceiling design. To realize the ceiling pattern, the digital design helps to analysis curvature data and produces an accurate setting out which saving on-site construction time.
