DESIGN NAME: Abacus
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Bookshelves And Coat Hanger
INSPIRATION: Abacus is inspired by the Chinese abacus and steelyard balance. Meanwhile, the shape of the coat-hooks is inspired by the shape of the lighter.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Abacus is a multi-functional wall-mount bookshelves and coat hanger, which consists of wood blocks with clean edges and flying metal wires. The lighter-shape hooks can move along the wires.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The hooks can conceal behind the blocks, which can be used as bookends and coat hangers. Users can also hang scarves in between the rails. By installing additional sets, the Abacus can be extended.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in August 2016 in Hong Kong and finished in September 2016 in Hong Kong.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: With the wall fixings hidden inside the block, Abacus has a simple outlook with clean edges. The hooks are installed on double-wire rails which can move along without scratches.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: According to United Nations, 54% of the world’s overall population was urban population in 2014; in 2050, urban population would rise to 66% of the world’s overall population. In other words, as urban population increases across the world, residences in cities are shrinking in order to fulfil the demand.
CHALLENGE: The furniture is highly responsible to improve the efficiency in space-usage in small properties, especially 1-bedroom flats and studios. Every inch should be used competently and wisely. Thus, the usage of space at the corridor is crucial.
