PRIMARY FUNCTION: Baby Bottle
INSPIRATION: My nephew was about one year old. One day in the car, my brothers’ mother-in-law was shaking an ordinary baby bottle in the back seat and the top came flying off and milk spilled everywhere. I thought, there must be a better way to mix a baby bottle. I began contemplating different ideas. The first idea I came up with was a baby bottle shaker, but I realized it would be too bulky, I decided to grab a blender and just miniaturize it. This is the first and only baby bottle blender.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This rechargeable, battery-operated, anti-colic portable baby bottle blender that mixes powdered baby formula, rice and oatmeal cereals in seconds. The powerful in-bottle blender helps reduce foaming and air bubbles in the milk. This helps cut down your baby from swallowing air preventing post feeding discomfort to your baby. In addition, it completely mixes the formula leaving no chunks of powder formula that will clog the bottle nipple. Finally, a Quality blend makes a big difference in taste.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This product can be operated simply by adding water, pouring formula and pushing the button. It will then mix the baby formula, rice and oatmeal cereals thoroughly. The powerful in-bottle blender helps reduce foaming and air bubbles in the milk. This helps prevent your baby from swallowing air minimizing post feeding discomfort to the baby. With an ordinary bottle, you have to intensely shake it to mix the formula properly. This tedious process can cause various problems like leaving chunks of powder formula that will clog the bottle nipple, cause leakage, foaming and air bubbles in the milk. The great thing about this bottle is that it saves the parent time, mixes well for great taste, and helps prevent post feeding discomforts like gas, spit-up, and colic.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: In our baby bottle design, we’ve thought of every detail necessary to create the right baby bottle. We designed our mixer to be appealing to the eye as well as highly effective with two downward facing arms to thoroughly mix powdered baby formula, rice and oatmeal cereals in seconds. For power, we found that Nickel–metal hydride batteries (Ni-MH) were the safest and most reliable source of energy for the baby bottle mixer. We chose the micro USB input for its optimal battery charging speed and convenience. There is also an LED indicator to display the battery life of the mixer. In addition, we’ve added an anti-colic air vent system at the bottom of the bottle that allows the milk to pass through the nipple smoother, separating air from the milk to help prevent post feeding discomfort to the baby. One of the most important components is our breast-like Silicone nipple to simulate mom’s natural shape, making it easier to combine breast and bottle feeding. The bottle is mainly composed of Polypropylene plastic and silicone. The entire bottle and mixer are BPA free, Phthalates free and PVC free for the safety of the children.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: During the research and development period, we used trial and error to come up with a solution to the problem. Our objective was to make it easier for parents to mix formula properly and effortlessly. We experimented with multiple mixing methods. During these experiments, we concluded that stirring was optimal for the desired result. When you shake an ordinary bottle, you create a back-and-forth splashing motion which causes foam and air to enter into the milk. The mixer moves the liquid and formula together as one, mixing at the bottom while continuing upward and downward without splashing the milk back and forth reducing air bubbles.
CHALLENGE: During the design process, we came across a few challenges. The first challenge was to make the product small and light-weight for convenience. Secondly, was the selection of the motor, printed circuit board (PCB) and battery in order to simplify for mass production. The last challenge was to create a bottom air vent seal that is simple to remove for easy cleaning. Luckily we overcame all of these obstacles and made the first and only portable baby bottle blender.
