DESIGN NAME: Omdesign 2018 Packaging
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Packaging
INSPIRATION: Inspired by 875 years of history, we have created an original packaging, a simple and unique piece, highly differentiating, to show all the boldness, ambition and determination for which we are known, since 1998.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Created for Omdesign 20th anniversary commemoration, this self-promotion edition is a travel to the origins of our country and to the Portuguese Discoveries that also pictures the agency values and their vision about the future.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The monkey's fist knot of our packaging has a handle to carry it. This is one of the most famous knots in the world, used since olden times by sailors for throwing the end of a cable further. Notwithstanding, also the bottle has a sling knot at the neck, a technique used by wise sailors since ancient times to carry their bottle of wine and always keep it cool underwater. This is all compared to the willing of the agency to take their projects further and to sail on calm waters on the discovery of new markets.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in September 2018 in Oporto (Portugal) and finished in December.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Omdesign created a sisal based piece, shaped as a monkey's fist knot, and chose a bottle and a Madeira wine to put inside and to toast with partners and clients. At the neck of the bottle there is a sling knot and an illustration on the label that represents the audacity of the Portuguese navigators in olden times. To complete this packaging, Omdesign developed a premium cardboard tube with an ancient map and marked their 20th anniversary logo using sealing wax.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: In 1143, the history of Portugal began to be written. It all started in the North and, without ever losing our way, we, the Portuguese, went to sea in 1415, to prove how audacious we were. We showed the world that we are adventurous by nature, like the Portuguese navigators before us that once set out to sea. Inspired by 875 years of history, Omdesign decided to celebrate their 20th anniversary with reference to the victories and conquers of their ancestors, showing that the agency is also in the right path and affirming that they want to keep sailing the ship on the right course and to discover new routes and unknown seas.
CHALLENGE: The major challenge was to create an original and unique packaging, able to mark the course set 20 years ago, when the journey began and, at the same time, that could do justice to the audacity, boldness and bravery of the Portuguese navigators. Both the materials and techniques utilized were selected to honor some typical Portuguese icons.
