DESIGN NAME: Cilindro
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Desk
INSPIRATION: The column, whether ancient or contemporary, is a form that is always present in our architectonic imagery.
The intention of creating a shape that moves in the internal space with minimal friction, led us to choose a cylindrical shape.
The absence of sharp edges allows a great capacity adaptation to any space, both in use situations and when not used.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This cylinder, in addition to its function as a container, due to the fact that it articulates in two semi-circles, allows one of them to be constituted as a container, while the other, by lifting the plane that closes it, is also a horizontal working surface. This surface has on its rear face a telescopic tubular leg which, after a slight pressure, makes a rotation allowing the horizontal position of the work surface through its verticality.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The mobility dimension, and the physical characteristics of this cylindrical shape allows easy handling through the internal spaces while allowing it a multifunctionality as a complement to work areas, or even constituting a fixed work point.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project started its development in January 2019 in Oia, Portugal and was completed in September 2019 in Oia, Portugal.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The semi-cylinders are constituted by curved mdf panels coated with laminated surface on both sides shaped via mold.
The shelves and folding top are made of 19mm melamine, with 2 mm thick anti-shock pvc tops.
The telescopic folding leg allows the correct positioning of the work surface and is made up of 50 mm diameter steel, coated with electrostatic Epoxy Polyester powder polymerized paint with a thickness of 90mm.
At the bottom of the two semi-cylinders there are two foldable surfaces in 0.8mm steel allowing access to cable storage.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: With a diameter of 500mm and a height of 890mm.The folding top has a dimension of 620 x 447 and is fixed at 720mm high by means of its telescopic leg.The total weight of the cylinder is 30.5 kg.The materials used are 60 percent recycled, and have been the object of a strong environmental concern. The wood material is 70 percent recycled. The paint has zero voc emissions is solvent-free and the packaging is 100 percent recyclable.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The concept of this project has its origin in a growing need to respond to the phenomenon of Home Working.
In effect, either because of new work methodologies closely linked to information technology or because of space savings, a new job was created for which it was necessary to find an answer. The creation of an object that, due to its shape / dimension and mobility, is integrated into the home or work space, is functionally very topical.
Working at home, as a complement to short stays at the Office place, is now a new way of working.
This new methodology brings ecological advantages due to less movement of people, more versatility in the work of each one and finally, from an economic and communicational point of view, an effective advantage.
CHALLENGE: Once the Work Station project concept was defined, it was necessary to shape it, find a production technology and finally a competitive production cost.
The way to produce the semi-cylinders in mdf coated with laminate inside and outside was the first difficulty to overcome, both in terms of costs, physical resistance and final weight of the piece.
This was followed by the articulation of the two semi-cylinders, as well as the folding work surface in 2 mm thick anti-shock pvc, held horizontally by a telescopic foldable leg in 50 mm diameter steel tube.
The six wheels, applied to the two semi-cylinders complete the mobility that this cylinder must have in order to, with its reduced weight of 30.5Kg, be able to move in space or be fixed in a certain position.
