DESIGN NAME: daVinci SP
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Surgical System
INSPIRATION: At Intuitive, we believe that minimally invasive care is life-enhancing care. By combining ingenuity and intelligent technology, we expand the potential of physicians to heal without constraints.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The da Vinci SP surgical system is an advanced, robotic-assisted platform for minimally invasive surgery (MIS). It acts as a natural extension of a surgeon’s eyes and hands through a combination of cutting-edge robotics, 3DHD stereoscopic vision, and intuitive human-interface controls. The system delivers all of this capability through a single small incision.
We have been vigilant about providing as much capability to surgeons and their care teams (nurse circulators, scrub techs, and surgical assists) as possible, because we know that they will use everything we can provide to care for their patients. That’s why we work to deliver smart technology and capabilities that provide the ease of use, services, training, and data insights required to help surgeons and their teams succeed.
Said Dan Eun, MD, Chief Robotic Surgery, Temple University Hospital: “The introduction of the da Vinci SP system represents the first time that surgeons will have a comprehensive surgical platform that combines a single port and enhanced optics with wristed advanced instrumentation. As the capabilities and limitations of minimally invasive surgery shift, da Vinci SP will challenge us all to rethink and redefine what is possible and how we can improve surgical care to our patients."
The da Vinci SP system is FDA cleared for urologic procedures, including prostate, cancer, kidney cancer, and advanced urinary tract reconstruction surgery.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: We know that the most important thing surgeons focus on is their patients and the life-saving procedures they do. Our greatest challenge is to take a very complicated technology and make it simple for practical use.
This is a theme that is central to our design philosophy. We strive to provide solutions that feel natural and intuitive to our users. For this reason, da Vinci systems start with the human hand, working through physics and algorithms to reproduce in our robotic instruments the commanded motions of the surgeon’s expert hands in a way that feels natural and intuitive to them.
Our intent is that simplicity and clarity are expressed visually: if the eye is drawn to a light on the system, or a dark accent, this communicates a place to touch, a button to press, or useful information. This Intention and clarity in design strives for a language which can be quickly learned, easily discovered, and lower the cognitive burden of using the system.
In robotics, simplicity can be expressed through a combination of digital and physical: For example, our cart drive system uses sensors to respond to the pressure from the user’s hands. This makes the 1,800 lb. weight of the robot patient cart something you can guide with your fingertips.
Ronney Abazza, MD, FACS, OhioHealth Robotic Urologic Surgeon, said, “The da Vinci SP system is a remarkable piece of engineering. From the first time I used it, I was impressed by how well designed it is and how it helps address the challenges of a single-port system. I believe surgeons will be surprised by how easy it is to use. This robotic platform is the biggest advancement since the original da Vinci Standard system was upgraded to the da Vinci S system, which helped accelerate the evolution of robotic surgery.”

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Developed over the course of many years, research for this product spanned many stages of the development process. Crucial to all projects at Intuitive is the process associated with developing a medical device for clearance by the FDA. This involves Formative and Summative analysis of proposed designs, engineering validation and verification processes as well as clinical trials. The design team has also engaged in regular field study where ethnographic data was collected and latent needs analyzed.
CHALLENGE: Statistics show that nearly everyone, at some time in their life, is likely to visit an operating room for a surgical procedure. Minimally invasive care isn’t just about providing a minimally invasive procedure, ultimately it is about minimizing the impact of surgery on the lives of patients. Da Vinci SP was created with the patient in mind to advance and enable new approaches for minimally invasive care – especially in constrained areas where traditional MIS may not be a viable option today.
The introduction of the da Vinci SP® system moves surgery forward by addressing key challenges clinicians face today. Many MIS procedures require intricate work within a constrained area. This is where the da Vinci SP system excels – delivering fully-wristed surgical instruments and the first fully-wristed endoscope through a small, one-inch access port. Some surgical procedures are especially challenging from an access perspective. With the instruments and camera consolidated in one arm, the da Vinci SP system can reach anywhere within 360° from one port placement - helping the surgeon achieve broad versatility of access.
