| DESIGN NAME: Cumulus PRIMARY FUNCTION: Pavilion INSPIRATION: The design inspired by the ever-changing element, cloud. Cloud soften and merge the border of the celestial sphere and vast landscape. The pavilion imitates and abstracts the motion of Cumulus, accumulate of cloud, from the form to graphic of fabric. The 23 layers seamless fabric in maximum 25m long printed with gradient blue swaying in the gentle breeze. The minimization of the structure created a floating illusion synchronized with the glass window with stunning Victoria Harbour sea view. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: To create the design in it's fullest, 23 layers of silk chiffon fabric with an interval of 200mm, spreading maximum 25 meters long and forming the width of 6 meters applied in the pavilion as the illusion of cloud and provide a semi-private space for the VIP lounge. The blue blooming the pale and seamless fabric with gradient like ink painting, which printed by one of the two fabric printing company in the world. The minimized wooden struction echo with the natural movement of Cumulus. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The pavilion is tailor-made for the Swire Properties Art Basel Hong Kong 2018 VIP Lounge. The pavilion provides a multipurpose space in the centre of the space for cocktail parties, book signing, lecture and meeting. Also, reception and bar in the front area in greeting the guests and a back-of-house at the end for catering preparation and storage. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Commissioned by Swire Properties, the pavilion was built for the Art Basel Hong Kong 2018 as the Swire VIP Lounge held in Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, Wan Chai, Hong Kong from 26 to 31 March 2018. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The pavilion used 23 layers of semi-transparent Kvadrat's silk chiffon fabric with maximum 25 meters long and 6 meters width without seams. The fabric formerly in white to create the gradient blue effect. The seamless fabric is printed with a blue colour in one of the only two fabric company which able to print continuously on 25 meters long fabric in the world. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The Pavilion is 22 meters long, 5.6 meters width. TAGS: Fabric, silk chiffon, art basel, pavilion, art, cloud RESEARCH ABSTRACT: To introduce the translucent and light weighted image of the cloud to the pavilion. Various fabric trialled as cotton, silk, lycra, lace, chiffon, each of them has different features and traits. Silk chiffon selected as the fabric with printable function, high transparency and pliable characteristics. CHALLENGE: The pavilion situated in the corridor, a long and narrow place with two large columns. The overall structure angled and utilize fabric to mimic the fluid movement of clouds to cope with the site constricts. Also, the articulation of arrange bar and back-of-house at the surrounded the columns aligned the entire light-weighted visual effect. Printing a 30-meter-long seamless fabric continuously is challenging and only one printer in Shanghai accepted the challenge with us. Via research, constant communication and sample review, the outcome is well-presented our concept and vision.
