DESIGN NAME: The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Guestrooms
INSPIRATION: Vegas is a theatrical city, so for The Cosmopolitan, we wanted to keep that mystique and drama, but made sure it was tasteful and not ostentatious. We conceived a sophisticated and edgy design that the hotel had not seen before.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Our goal was to re-energize the hotel's design and set The Cosmopolitan Las Vegas apart from all others on the Vegas Strip. The focus was on the artwork in the room and suites, which introduce concepts to guests as to what the hotel's slogan, "Just the Right Amount of Wrong," may mean, playing to their fantasies, while leaving them open to interpretation.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Each room allows for an immediate connection upon entering. It is meant to be a theatre stage where the art pieces are characters, but so are the guests who are invited to indulge their curiosities and ponder what The Cosmopolitan logo may mean. There are no wrong answers, each moment spent in the rooms is meant to be an immersive experience, left completely to interpretation.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project began in earnest in 2016 when The Cosmopolitan invited an initial list of 20 top design firms to Las Vegas, including Virserius Studio, to bid on the project. From there four finalist firms, in addition to The Cosmopolitan internal design team, were chosen to construct model rooms in the hotel. Virserius Studio secured the win to overhaul almost 3000 guestrooms, which opened in January 2018, with additional work completed later in the year.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The art pieces were created by employing several special techniques. There is a photograph of a profile of a woman brought to life using powder delicately printed on recycled corrugated craft paper. Another piece incorporates a soft powder print charcoal drawing of a woman exercising with ribbon in a free expression of movement. Yet another gallery of images explores different surfaces and subjects based on the popular 18th century practice of portraits in circle and oval shapes. The optical effects of those images were inspired by 19th century French Romantic artist Delacroix.

The Terrace One Bedrooms measure 57 sq metres

The Angled suites measure 71 square metres
The Reception suites measure 98 square metres

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Art played a pivotal role in our concept; here the art sets the stage for the characters, or guests. Each space embodies theater and fantasy, and invites guests to ponder what the right amount of wrong is, leaving it to their interpretation. Each room allows for an immediate connection upon entering and, ideally, a physical representation of The Cosmopolitan logo, identifying what the exact amount of bad is.
CHALLENGE: This is a very large project, 3000 rooms, so the magnitude of the project was significant. Also, there were certain existing conditions that we had to work around. However, we have been working very closely with architects and owners to make sure what worked in concept also works in its realization.
