PRIMARY FUNCTION: Interactive Robot
INSPIRATION: When facing social dilemmas like aging, leftover children, and surge of single-person youth in China, companionship is the common needs of different groups of people. Not to replace human, but for human’s wellbeing, NIRO Pro will help people have a better life with family and friends by building emotional connections with users to help users.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: NIRO PRO is an interactive robot, a seamlessly integration of complex hardware and software with a minimalism appearance. The combination of computer vision and NLP technologies gives NIRO PRO abilities to have a fluent conversation without wake words. Its built-in micro laser projector can project up to 14 inches of high-definition images on any surface to request any content you want via VUI. The merging of virtual and reality creates a more real, immersive and fun interaction experience.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: NIRO Pro needs no wake-up words. All it needs is your certain eye contacts so it knows when to talk to you, just like humans usually do, based on the application of AI techniques such as Natural Language Processing and image recognition. Unlike traditional screen-operated robots, NIRO Pro uses laser projection to create a larger touchable screen area to create better interactive effects and better perceptions of immersion.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project has been launched in Beijing in April 2018 and has been completed in Beijing in January 2019.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: We believe that robots and humans should be connected in emotional levels and the key is to design robots lively. NIRO Pro has a rounded head and we have customized a flexible LED to present its eyes. We have set three free degrees in NIRO Pro’s head structure design, this gives NIRO Pro abilities to mimic human’s head movement and body language in conversational communications.

CHALLENGE: In many existing traditional human-robot voice interactions, users have to use wake words all the time which gives users unnatural perceptions. Inspired by eye contacts, mouth movement and sound localization of human communication process, we enabled robots such abilities via camara and visual algorithms.The user's identity, intention and status can be detected by machine vision of NIROpro to serve a active and natural HCI without wake words.
