| DESIGN NAME: LADDER CHAIR PRIMARY FUNCTION: Chair INSPIRATION: This is created for the request that adults as well as children have a meal together at the same height of table. On the market there are some adjusting chairs already, but there is nothing which is made of natural wood and non-artificial painting. Children should touch, feel and know the genuine things in the important early time for their future. Natural wood materials have good texture and smell, which give stimulus to develop children’s body and brain well. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This is a chair as connecting children and adults like a ladder. The height of the sitting and foot board can be changed by every 4cm, so that from baby to adult can use this. It’s designed by KIDS DESIGN LABO with the idea what children see, touch and feel at the early stage, needs to be very well designed and make children know and appreciate genuine things. As climbing up a ladder, children will grow up. Of course, this can be used just as a ladder to take something at higher places. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: As the chair for both of children and adults, it’s possible to adjust at the 11 levels of each 4cm. There are 4 levels for the sitting board and 7 for the foot board. As children grow up, it can be adjusted. Before changing the level, loosen a screw of the black steel bar and then after finishing changing the level, fasten the screw, so that each board can be steady. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: This is made of only natural wood and with natural oil painting. In most of children’s furniture, synthetic resin or artificial paintings are used just for its maintenance, productivity and durability. It’s certain that wood is sensitive and easy to scratch, but it's more important children know and appreciate the genuine things, and how to take good care of things. So the color, texture, and pattern which the wood has in itself are kept as what they are, to make the most of. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: L: 500mm, W: 460mm, H: 770mm TAGS: chair, furniture, nursery, kindergarten, children, kids, architecture, design, preschool RESEARCH ABSTRACT: KIDS DESIGN LABO is an affiliated company of HIBINOSEKKEI + Youji no Shiro, which is an architecture design office only for kindergarten and nursery. HIBINOSEKKEI + Youji no Shiro has been engaged in more than 520 projects not only in Japan but also around the world. So with these enough knowledge and experiences of designing for children, this chair is made for public customers. CHALLENGE: Natural wood is easy to scratch and difficult to clean when it gets dirty. But we don’t think them as negative point. In the case of the plastic products, once it’s broken and scratched, it can’t be repaired as it was. But wood furniture can be cleaned easily as it was with sandpaper and oil. Also, by maintaining furniture with children, they will know what the real wood is and how to maintain and last. They will learn take good care of thing in their daily life with natural things. NAME: KIDS DESIGN LABO PROFILE: KIDS DESIGN LABO is a professional creative team, which designs various items for children such as furniture, stationaries, uniforms, bags, logotypes and so on, while giving design consultation. It is often the cases with items for children, that they are often designed with famous characters, or has too many bright colors in one items. True that those would attract children at first, but KIDS DESIGN LABO doubt that those would teach children to appreciate genuine things. Nothing but the things which children experience, see touch and use at the early stage of their lives need to be very well designed. |
