DESIGN NAME: Veloso
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residential Compound
INSPIRATION: The driving force behind this project was the ability to overcome the difficult geolocation constraints of the project's site and be able to design , plan and build a project to respond to the client's time and cost limitations.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The design proposal is of a 33-unit residential compound in Nacala, a remote city in the northern part of Mozambique. The compound consists of 3 different house designs variations in order to cater for different market needs.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Their layout was carefully designed to allow undisturbed sea view to each unit while preserving complete privacy for their tenants. These parameters contributed to a joyful interplay between the houses creating a non-repetitive distribution of the units in the masterplan.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The design and engineering of the project was a 4 months intensive work that allowed the project to be delivered in 12 months.
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Architecture, Building and Structure Design
|
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The project was conceived to be build using light steel frame construction as it was developed to be the fastest and most feasible prefabricated solution for a remote area where construction materials and skilled labour are inexistent.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Plot Size : 12500 m2
Build Area : 4200 m2
Houses Size: 100 to 120 m2
TAGS: innovative housing solutions, residential , housing in Africa.
RESEARCH ABSTRACT: This project has allowed development of a research agenda in innovative housing solutions using unconventional methods of construction for remote areas to respond to the increasing housing needs in markets such as Africa.
CHALLENGE: The challenge was to be able to design and engineer a prefabricated modular housing system that can be easily be transported to a distant area and assembled on site by unskilled labour coming from the site’s adjacent community.
